Celebrating Success; A Way Of Encouragement

avatar

More often than not, people get so ambitious of what they want to achieve and after that, they will set their eyes on another target without taking time to celebrate the first milestone that was achieved. The truth is that taking time celebrate and acknowledge your success, no matter how little it may look, can serve as a very powerful motivation to even achieve more. In fact, in order to maintain motivation and to encourage yourself to do more, you have to learn to appreciate your little wins.

There are times that when you are faced with a very challenging task ahead, all you will need to be motivated and encouraged is to relate back to your past wins. This will reinforce your commitment and reassure you that your actions of past have yielded positively and it will yield again. Of course, if you could achieve something worthwhile in the past, it will brighten your hopes that you can achieve it again and again. This is why you should learn to celebrate your successes and your achievements. Trust me, you are your own greatest encouragement. As long as you keep encouraging yourself to keep moving, you will never become discouraged.

I remember what one of my teachers once told me sometimes ago; "if you count one and celebrate it, it will give you the zeal to count up to ten." In an organisation for example, you will discover that if the staff are regularly appreciated for the input and for any task completed, they will be eager to do more and it will give the encouragement to even go beyond your expectations. In one of the places where I worked briefly during the school vacation period some years back, I met a supervisor who never appreciated any staff for their input. In fact, no matter what you do, she would just say that you are just doing your job and that would be it.

Well, there was no motivation to put in the best. So everyone would just stick to their job description and just do their work without bothering to put in any extra effort. What is the need of going beyond your limit and at the end of the day it will not be appreciated? This affected the overall output of the organisation until a new supervisor was brought in. He changed a whole lot of things and even included reward mechanisms. Even though you are doing your job, he still added rewards to people who finish on time, people who put in more time to work, people who go beyond expectations, etc. These made people encouraged and willing to put in their best because their little achievements are celebrated. Shortly before I left because of the resumption of school, my colleague told me "Sammy, I am willing to give my life for this company." This goes to show how encouragement can be achieved by acknowledgement of the little successes that one achieved.

For a healthy balance between the pursuit of one's goals and other aspects of their lives, you need to learn how to appreciate yourself for every milestone achieved. Some people only beat themselves over what they failed to achieve but they never cared to take a moment to celebrate what they have achieved. No wonder they tend to get easily discouraged if their expectations are not met. If you look deeply, you will discover that there are lots of things that you have actually achieved and that you are doing excellently well in your own capacity.

In order to facilitate the act of celebrating your successes, you have to remove competition mentality from yourself. If you see others as your competitor, you may not see your success as success, rather you will just be modelling your life after someone's standards. But when you understand that you are an entirely different individual with your own unique goals, dreams, and targets, you will focus more on yourself - getting better and appreciating yourself. One of the things that you should have in mind is that if you are waiting for someone to encourage you, you may wait for long. So rise up and encourage yourself by appreciating and celebrating your little wins.
