Discovering Your Purpose [Part 3/3]

It is true that there is a measure of greatness that is resident in every human but why it looks like some people are yet to achieve greatness is because they have not discovered their purpose. You will agree with me that it is easier for someone to function in a place that the person is built for. This is just like how a fish functions maximally in the water. Obviously, the same fish, if taken out of the water to the land, will have different functioning. In the same way, if someone deviates from their purpose, they will not function in full potential. We looked at ways to discover one's purpose in our last episode and we shall be concluding it with some more tips to help one discover their purpose.

1. Take a look at the skills you already have

There are sometimes that the skills you have will be a stepping-stone to the discovery of your purpose. Many people are particularly skillful in certain arts which could point them to the right direction towards the discovery of their purpose. Also, your skills can give you an edge and something to leverage on in order to achieve your purpose. I am sure many people may have heard about the Wright brothers (Orville and Wilbur) and how they invented the airplane. However, what some people may not be aware of is that they were skilled bicycle repairmen which gave them an edge towards the actual of their dreams.

They started with fixing bicycles and that opened them up to learn more about mechanics, which eventually led to the pathway to discover their purpose. Any opportunity you have to learn a skill should be utilized well because you may not know where that particular skill will come in handy. I remember the story of a very renowned technologist of this era. He started by working with his father in his auto shop and learning how to fix and revamp cars. From there, he got to learn how machines work. This helped to shapen him for his purpose and eventually, he found himself in the technology field as a brilliant inventor and innovator. This is simply because he put his skills to work.

I normally tell people that no skill anyone acquire is wasted. Even if they do not see the immediate usefulness of the skill at the moment, it may be useful in the not-so-distant future. This is why one needs to have at least a particular skill that they can boast of. In this era, people now look beyond just theories to what the person can offer in terms of skills. So do not look down on any skill that you have today. More so, keep going for more skills.

2. Look within and ask yourself some pertinent questions

There are some questions that if you ask yourself and answer truthfully, it will give you an insight of what you are built for. These questions should be personal and the answer should be truthful to yourself and in all honesty. Obviously, you will know when you are telling yourself the truth. Example:

  • The things you find yourself doing: Some of the things you find yourself doing have logical explanation - it may just be that you are actually built for it. For example, in the house, you may have the natural proclivity to fix sockets, bulbs, small appliances, etc. This may not be a coincidence, it may just be that you actually have a purpose to fulfil in the engineering field.

  • What impact do you want to create? What you hope to achieve in life can point you towards what your purpose is. If you see yourself always drawn towards something, it may simply mean that you are built for that.

  • What do you have natural affection for? I have a friend that while growing up, he normally feels so sad seeing someone in a health challenge. As little as he was then, he would do anything within his ability to make the person feel better. Fastforward to now, he is in the medical field doing excellently well. You see, what you have affinity for might just be a pointer to the realisation of your purpose.

Thanks for reading

Peace on y'all
