Knowledge; A Powerful Tool For Success

There is nothing that makes for easy success like knowing what many others do not know. Knowledge gives you an edge even in your field of endeavour. You will be surprised that people no longer look at the degrees you have but what you know - which also correlates to the solution you can proffer. If you have the knowledge of what they are looking for, even if they do not like your face, they will have no choice than to call you for assistance. This is why you should keep enhancing your knowledge-base. That is, keep building yourself.

I am sure you have heard about this popular saying; "knowledge confers power." Obviously, when you have knowledge in a particular field, it will be easy for you to gain mastery in that particular field. When doctors go to medical school for example, they will get relative knowledge about medicine and the human body. However, for them to increase their knowledge, they will have to specialise in a field which will give them an extensive knowledge in that field. If you have a medical case related to that specialty, you will not consult with someone that just finished from general medicine but you will look for the consultant - because of the extensive knowledge they have about the field.

The more you know, the more your value increases, and the more you will be sought out for. There was a story that was told by a friend about a particular company. This company specialises in fabrication of metals using strings of heavy machineries that are connected to each other in order for the final product to be actualized. A day came when one of the machines was down and could not function even though it was switching on. As such, nothing was going on in the company for the whole day as the engineers tried all they could to get the machine to function well but could not. This spanned for a period of three days without solution and at that point, they have already made losses running into millions.

They had to call on their close ally to lend them engineers but when they came, they could not fix it because the machine was alien to them as they have not met that kind of machine before. The only option left was to ship the machine back to the company for repairs and that would cost them heavily on shipment and logistics. However, before the final decision, one of the staff made a recommendation to them about someone he knows that fixes heavy machines and suggested that they should contact him. When he came, he requested that they switch on the entire machines so as to observe them. When they switched them on, he started from the first one to move over them while listening to the sounds they made.

He got to a point and stopped, the he brought out a marker and made a mark at that spot. He then requested that the particular spot should be unscrewed and the parts exposed. After which he asked them to couple a particular wire and that was it. When they screwed back the panel and switched it on, to their surprise, the machines were up and running, and functioning in full capacity. When they asked him about his payment, he told them $10,000. They expressed shock at how he could charge that amount for a 15 minute job. He simply told them that the knowledge he used to fix the machine was not gotten in 15 minutes but over the years.

When you have knowledge in a particular field, it tends to simplify the activities in that field for you. As a matter of fact, expertise is just a way of making a complex task look simple.

When getting knowledge, you should not just be limited to a particular field. Imagine if you enter a place and they are having an intelligent discussion about something but it is sounding alien to you simply because you have not gone wide in the acquisition of knowledge. At that point, you will just be observing without contributing. But if you already have knowledge about that field too, you can join the discussion and even give your contribution. This is why I believe that if the only knowledge you have is directly related to your field or a particular field only without knowing things about other fields, then you are very limited.
