Looking At The Other Side Of The Story

(Edited)

Sometimes people just base their judgement on one side of a particular story and forget that there might be other sides to it. When someone does something, first of all, you should understand that there may be hidden reasons to that, so do not judge them based on what you assumed. There is a need to give people benefit of doubt and, at least, hear them out before you place your judgement. Even if what they did may appear wrong, the truth is that there may be a good intention behind it, or it may be done to prevent a bigger evil from happening.

When the number "6" is written, the person sitting opposite to you will process the information as a "9" because of perception. You see, what you perceive about someone's actions may not be the real intention behind it and may not also be what others will perceive. So before you react based on someone's actions, try to enquire about the reasons or intentions first. More so, if you try to put yourself in the place of the person that took the action, you may find yourself performing a similar action as the person.

A particular incident happened as shared by my friend. He was coming back from work on a certain day, so he decided to drive by the local market to get some groceries for his wife as demanded by her. The road to the market has a steep landscape with many of the sellers putting their good on the roadside to sell. So on descending from the road towards the market, trying to apply the brakes, he discovered that his brakes were lost. He quickly had to make a split-second decision because entering the market with that speed will be catastrophic. So he swerved to the side of the road, hoping to stop the car with the other cars parked along the roadside.

Well, the plan worked out, he hit a couple of cars and it brought his own car to a stop, but one car was badly damaged because the impact was much, but no one was injured or harmed - thankfully as he may be. He came out to inspect the car that was badly damaged and it was a police patrol vehicle parted along the road. Now the man was already looking guilty even before he could narrate his experience. What the policemen and everyone saw was that he bashed their car. But in reality, he avoided a bigger evil - running into the market and killing people.

You see, if you do not stop for a moment to see things from the other perspective, you may be tempted to judge him wrongly by his action, while forgetting the intention behind it. He prevented a major catastrophe but no one saw it, and all they could see was the misdeeds that he did by damaging people's cars. Imagine if the person was put in a similar scenario in the future, what will you expect his choice to be?

No matter how you are moved to judge someone, remember that you can actually be wrong in your judgement. More so, remember that the person's intention may be right. Then remember that second chances do exist. The truth is that many of us are recipients of second chances, so why should we not show it to others too? As a matter of fact, if second chances become nonexistent, you will be surprised how many people will be very lonely now. As long as humans are not perfect, then they have the propensity to make mistakes and commit errors, so you should give second chance to people because you will need it someday.

Peace on y'all
