Patience; A Necessary Requirement For The Actualization Of Success

One of the major undoings of many people in this era is the mentality of "quick-quick". That is, zero patience - they want to move from 0% to 100% in a second without following the due process. The truth is, for everything that you want to achieve in life, there is always the required due process to get it done and anything asides that process may affect the result negatively. In the journey to true success, you shoud understand that patience is needed because success that will be sustained must be built and not delivered on a platter of gold.

Many years ago when I was much younger, I had a small garden in the place where we lived. I remember that I normally planted maize there and after few months, I harvested it. Even though it was not much but the joy I derived from watching the seeds germinate into seedlings, then into plant and the whole process, was worth it. At a point, I decided to plant a mango seed there, but I didn't know that mangoes do not grow and bring fruits in months like the maize. After a few months, nothing was coming forth and I thought that something was wrong with the plant, so I decided to give it a few more months, still there was no fruit yet.

When I complained to my friend that normally put me through farming practices that my mango does not seem to be doing well, he asked me calmly when I planted it. I told him about 8 months ago, then he looked at me and said "have a little patience kid, you don't expect a mango to grow like a maize, but when the mango grows, you will understand why patience is needed" Those words sank deep into me and I quickly realized that there are levels to the requirements of patience. When you plant maize, you can start eating it after a few months, and when you eat it, it will be gone. But when a mango starts to yield fruits, it will yield yearly for decades.

More often than not, the bigger the success that you desired, the more patience you have to have. Patience does not mean sitting and doing nothing, neither does it mean wasting of time but it means putting the required plan in place and allowing it the time to be processed. You will agree with me that the time it takes to build a Bugatti Veyron car is not the same time it takes to build a tricycle, the Bugatti takes a far more time, but it is worth more than the tricycle. The time it takes a rat to go through gestation and delivery is not the same time it takes an elephant. An elephant may take over 1 year but when it delivers, it will be bigger than many rats combined. So you see, the level of patience you need to have is dependent on the kind of success you desire.

There are times that someone may decide to go for shortcuts but at the end, he will realise that it is not better than following the due process. When a woman conceives for example, it is expected that the gestation will last 9 months. If along the line, the woman grows impatient and induces the delivery before the due time, the baby may come as premature and may face many risks including the ultimate risk. In the same way, why some people's successes seem to be truncated is not because of lack of dreams but because they lack the required patience to see their success mature.

The truth is, each time you go against the principles of success, there are bound to have consequences. If people will consider the consequences of the actions that they want to take, they will know if the actions are really worth it. You should not only place the present moment into consideration when you act, there is also a need to put the future into perspective. If your actions will only bring momentary gratification but with future catastrophe, then it is not worth it. It is worthy to note that there is no wisdom in sacrificing your tomorrow for today's momentary pleasure.
