Wisdom And Its Applications

Life does not stop at knowing what to do, but there is a need for you to know how and when to apply it. It is not what you know that counts alone, but what you do with what you know. Someone may know something extensively, but if they cannot apply it to a real life scenario, then they will not benefit maximally from the knowledge. This is why I believe that one should be able to apply their knowledge to get something done in life. You have to understand that the world does not revolve around just theories, there is a place for practicals.

I remember when a friend told me a story of a lecturer in one of the maritime schools in the country. He rose to become a professor and the Head of Department because of how many years he had put into the school and of course, because of his knowledge. He knows about the various laws that guide the maritime, but often fell out with students who did not have performance that is up to par. There was this student from the riverine area, who had been a fisherman and a diver almost all his life, who gained admission into the school. Because of his low academic performance, he normally had issues with the lecturer.

In fact, a point came when the lecturer looked at him and told him plainly that he will not make anything worthwhile in life because of his performance. He felt so bad about it so much that it weakened him the more. By the end of the semester, they were scheduled for field trip as one of their school's project. So on that day, they took a boat to the destination because that is the only way to access it. After the excursion, and of course, the lecturer also fell out with that particular student, they were returning back. Right on the water, turbulence hit the boat and just when it was about to capsize, the student turned to the lecturer and asked if he could swim.

The lecturer screamed "I cannot!!" The student smiled and told him to quote theories for the sea and see if it will work. It was certain that the professor only know theories but at the point it was needed, it could not save him. Well, at that point, his theoretical knowledge could not save him and the other boy just dove into the water and swam to the shore. This goes to prove how the application of knowledge is important, not just acquiring it. As a matter of fact, the only potent way to prove that you know something is by applying the knowledge when it is needed.

There is a reason why, in class, after the teacher must have taught the students, they will be made to write exams in order for them to prove that they have understood the subject well enough to access the next class. The truth is that the world is not interested in what you claim to know but how you can apply it. Some very big companies now, if you go through their recruitment process, you will be surprised that they do not even bother about your credentials or other paper documents, but what you can offer. What is the point of having a very fine certificate but cannot do what you said you can? This does not mean that acquiring certificate is not good. Of course it is good, but you have to also be able to prove your worth.

Imagine a graduate of computer engineering who cannot format a computer system. I mean, how else will he prove that you know something? It is worth noting that your certificate and your university degrees can grant you access to certain doors, but to sustain yourself there, then you have to go beyond there. The world now seeks for the people that can provide solutions to the demanding questions that are facing them. Your value and your self-worth are validated by the application of your knowledge.

Where I did my internship, there was a time when our H.O.D came to enquire from me about a particular problem he was facing with a certain task. Adorably, I has encountered that particular challenged and learnt how to solve it. So I simply related the knowledge I had acquired through my previous experience and then applied it to the present problem and it was solved. He was wowed, and right there, he approved my pay rise. This proves how the application of knowledge can increase your self-worth. Always remember this; gain knowledge, then apply knowledge.
