HiveChess Arena S9.R6 - My Chess Tournament Report Including Games Analysis

"Modern chess is too much concerned with things like pawn structure. Forget it, checkmate ends the game.”

TOURNAMENT REPORT

Screenshot_20211204-102111_lichess.jpg

The tournament was registered with 30 players with just two players not playing a single game. Unstoppable Hiver @tungphong known as Blackswan21 on Lichess won the tournament again, this time snatching it late from eventual 2nd place @Pamboy27 who was so close to winning his first Hivechess event. @deadleaf made his debut on #Hivechess with a fantastic 3rd place performance which is very impressive.

It was important to note that both @jaki01 and @samostically dropped in performances with a 8th and 10th place in the tournament. @eniolw and @tony1294 4th and 5th place ensures a very exciting and competitive future events.

Congratulations to The winners And everyone who played

I found some interesting games I enjoyed, some which i made some quick Analysis on below. I was unable to make a hivechess study last week but hopefully I will this week.

Missed the Last Hivechess study?

INTERESTING TOURNAMENT GAMES

GAME 1

Stayoutoftherz(2078) 0-1 Realdeadleaf(2128)

If there is one thing I know about the player with the white pieces,it is that he plays his 1.d4 opening well. This game wasn't an exception as it began with the very popular Semi-slav defense with black playing

Screenshot_20211204-105101_lichess.jpg

5.Nd7
Both players played the opening phase and the game was equal for a long time. In the middle game,it was time to make choices, which piece are you going to keep or trade away?

Screenshot_20211204-110446_lichess.jpg
Position After 12.Bxf6
The position above looks equal with everyone having a decent structure and equal pieces, but some computers my slightly favour black because of the pair of bishops, but nevertheless there was still lot to play for.

@Stayoutoftherz could have won the game early on after a blunder by @deadleaf on move 18!

Move 18 f6??

White To Play And Win? Explain the Idea behind White move?

The game continued with black dominating space and having a small edge, and was later rewarded with a pawn which he grabbed tactically after 35.Qg3

Screenshot_20211204-112404_lichess.jpg

35.Qg3?? Black gained a pawn with 35.Rxd4 and ended up converting the game clinically.

This game explains that most times in chess, you get an opportunity, sometimes little and sometimes big. But the most important thing is spotting and taking it.

GAME 2

Pamboy27(2210) 1-0 Tz995(2112)

@pamboy27 was fighting so hard to win his first #hivechess event yesterday and this one of the games he played against a very strong Tz995, also know on hive as @franu.
The game began in a Mordern Scandinavian defense with Black playing 2.Nf6 instead of taking the pawn immediately with 2.Qxd5

Screenshot_20211204-113949_lichess.jpg
2.Nf6

I also like this method of playing as it enable the black player to actively develop his pieces without an early queen move. Tha game was equal in the opening but some how black and couldn't stop white from establish the pair of bishop threats as shown below.

Screenshot_20211204-114737_lichess.jpg
9.Ba3

The game proceeded with white putting pressure on black forcing him to play with alot of time(connections issues maybe). This yielded a piece blunder on move 23.Qb7 black played 23.Rb8?? Where the simple 24.Rxa6 wins the game. The game continued but the extra material was enou6for white to convert!.

In Conclusion...

It was a very interesting tournament. Sadly, I couldn't play my best but that is okay, I'm happy we got new winners except for @tungphong who already feels lonely at the top! Thanks to @stayoutoftherz for promoting this event.

I did have a video coverage of the event and i have the video uploaded in my previous post but here is the direct link to the video on 3speak!
