Newbies Initiative Tutorial - Tribe Tokens & The Use of Tags
Hello everyone,
Today I bring another tutorial for the Newbies initiative. In the last tutorial by @projectmamabg, We learnt about some popular applications we use to operate Hive. If you missed the tutorial, please kindly check it as it would make this article easier to understand.
Tribe tokens are also known as community tokens are tokens built on the Hive Blockchain. Hive is a native coin to the Blockchain while these tokens are built on the blockchain. They solely rely on the blockchain to store their data through contracts.
You can also call them layer two tokens which are defined as a secondary framework or protocol that is built on top of an existing blockchain system. In this case, The Hive Blockchain.
There are alot of these tokens on the Blockchain. Alot of them are created by Communities. One of the many reasons is to reward community members.
It is therefore important to understand how to earn them, trade them and Also understand their importance. I would highlight a few and I will be open to your questions in the comment section. Also, I will explain in more detail in the upcoming discord meeting.
Since these tokens are created mostly by communities, we can earn them by posting in a community. For example, The LeoFinance community has a $LEO token which means that by posting in that community, you can earn the $LEO token by upvotes!
When an author makes a post in a particular community which receives an upvote, The Author gets rewarded also with the community tribe token provided by the Curator who has a stake in the community.
What does that mean?
Just like how Staked Hive allows you to give an upvote, A stake in any tribe token allows you to give a tribe upvote.
Curation Rewards.
Another way to earn is by Staking and Voting. You can stake your earned community tokens and start voting others to get curation rewards.
You can also buy these tokens and stake them to earn.
Just like $Hive coin, these tribe tokens provide authors and curators rewards.

There are so many tokens created and exploring to see how you can join tribes that can help your Hive journey.
Tags are those labels we include at the end of our posts. The basic work of a tag on Hive is to create visibility for our content. Tags benefit both the Authors and the Curators. It helps Authors get their posts found easily and also helps in Search engine optimisation. It helps curators easily find their favourite content to curate.
Another way to earn a tribe token is by using the tribe's tag in your post. That means you can earn multiple tribe tokens on a single post with the use of tags.
It is very important to understand how to use these tags because abusing tags on Hive is frowned upon by many communities.
There are many tokens/communities on Hive which means there are many tags that can make your post visible in their community.
Some tags are general and can be used for any type of content, while some can only be used for related content.
For example, the tag #Hive can be used for any content because it is a general tag. Also, the #Proofofbrain tag can be used generally too.
You must find out before using a tag. I Recommend you use only tags related to your post if you are just starting on Hive. You can use tribe tags once you understand or belong to the tribe.
If your content is about sports, you can just use the tag #Sports.
How To Check Your Tribe Tokens
You can use the community's interface to check your upvotes. Popular tokens like $leo, $pob, $vyb $stem all have interfaces. With a single post and the use of the right tags, you can get upvotes from the different tribes. Here is an example from a recent post of mine.
In this post, I wrote about Blockchain Gaming! I posted it in the Leofinance Community. I did so because it is finance-related. I used the tag #gaming as I talked about a game. I used a general tribe tag like #vyb.
By checking the Vybz tribe interface, I can see my VYB rewards. The same as the LeoFinance interface.
Some tribes don't have an interface, so you have to wait and check them using the Hive engine after the post

Before the next task is given I would answer every question the newbies would have on this tutorial. So for this, there would be a discord meeting held on the SMILE DISCORD SERVER on Monday, 13th June 2022, at 7 pm GMT where all newbies can bring their questions and paste them into the #help-chat channel which I would provide answers to them via voice or can be pasted in the comments of this post as well.
After the Discord Meeting on Monday, A task would be given and then published on the @newbies-hive account with a video of what took place in the meeting. Please do well to bring in your Hive questions in the meeting.
Note: The meeting is not compulsory, but we do advise you to attend and ask your questions.
Excellent, I am very interested in learning a little more about tribe tokens. I did not know that the use of each token tag can have its own rules such as being for general use or for related content for example. No, it Isn't....You are always welcome to share your guides in the community and even other non-hive guides.
This post is for a newbies initiative program. So it is directed to some people in the program. However, since it has to do with Hive, everyone that sees this can learn from it.

I do have a question about tags. What is actually meant by "your first five tags are important"? And what happens to the rest of the five that could be added?
Then, is there really no way if removing the first tag used after posting i.e. to edit? 🤔
The first tag is automatically the tag of the community you post in.

I reminded of my early days on hive when I learnt all these things.
I would like to add a point here. If there is any confusion about using a tag, go to the communities about page and look carefully which type of content the community demands for then you can figure out if or not a particular tag can be used.
Very very important tutorial. Tags are one of the most overlooked strategies by us newbies to make our votes visible. Wrongly using a tag can bring consequences, so we'll have to be very careful. I remember using the #Leofinance that wasn't finance related once and I immediately got cautioned. Most times if you continue using those tags wrongly you might eventually get muted in the community or face another consequence.
I really want to understand how we can optimize our first 5 tags though, because most times we just use tags without a careful thought..

This is very explanatory and a good handout for the newbies who are yet to understand the different tribes and importance of tags and how they can be used. A lot of people abuse tags and sometimes that affects the votes they get on their votes. It's important to make sure that whatever tags you are using, the tag is indeed a tag accepted for such post.
Ecency is a tribe token I believe and earning it is pretty easy. It can also be used to earn rewards on post. Another amazing thing about ecency is that it shows you your tribe tokens without having to through the rigorous process of checking some of these tribes interface.

Hello @samostically how are you? I really liked this tutorial, but the truth is I have a confusion that I have had for some time and in fact after reading it I still have it. I don't understand how staking tokens works. Once someone told me that I could stake the tokens found the option on Peakd but I don't know what I actually did, then some time later I tried to reverse the process to sell them but I'm not sure what happened either 🤔😳.
