One person gets their feelings hurt because they didn't get a "good job" and suddenly the whole department has to deal with the atmospheric pressure of their bad mood, but on the other side depending on the full context i kinda get where he's coming from, especially if he felt he truly deserved it.

Yeah it's a delicate situation. I don't think it will turn into something toxic but lacking the understanding that other people need praise too was a tell for me.
