¿Me explico?

-Have you noticed how sad this time of year is?" the red-haired girl asked as soon as she crossed the threshold of the luxurious house.

Her shoes were no longer white, they were now dirty with mud from the puddle she had stepped in as she walked to her former friend's home.

-Do you mean how sad it is, or do you ask because of the sadness that eats away at you this season?" the tall man evaded with another question. In his hands was the vest that she had previously worn and left deposited in his hands.

The question hung in the air for a while until at one point, she took a breath and with a trembling voice whispered.

-Even I don't know, you know," her shoulders were shrugged in a gesture of disinterest, her accent was thick and some words were slurred with the tip of her tongue, "Autumn has always been the saddest season of the year. Do you think the autumnal equinox has something to do with it?

-I think it has everything to do with what you want it to look like.

Again, she didn't answer him. She didn't complain either, she was used to his inconsistent answers (or maybe she just didn't take the time to think about his words).

Together they walked the short distance from the entrance to the white leather furniture with that fresh pine smell she loved so much. The young Belarusian girl wished her home smelled that way, but since she emigrated she rarely cleaned it, work consumed her.

-Maybe it's the rain," she concluded, dropping her butt on the sofa and making it squeak uncomfortably.

-Don't use the rain as your Trojan horse to conclude that you're this sad because you were abandoned this time of year. Because yes, the rain is sometimes sad, but we can't blame it for how sad we are. Do you understand?

-You just don't get it. Have you ever noticed how stressful this time of year is? Couples break up and the few that are left are basking in the parks kissing in front of the noses of us sufferers.

-Then you're envious," the man concluded as he scratched the beard he had grown. It gave him more years than he had, but it made him look just like a good wine. (That's what she thought, only she wouldn't tell him because she was too ashamed).

-Envy? I doubt it, just... this is not a good season, memories fall like an incessant rain and sadness starts to eat away at me and watching autumn blooming through my window is not a great way to motivate me. You know what's funny? That I can use this season as a reference to all the misfortunes that befall me. Perhaps, the withered leaves accompany me in my sorrow.

-Indeed, dear friend. There are so many ways to feel envy that in the midst of our ailments we don't realize that this is really what we feel. So we blind ourselves and let envy consume us.
