Starring Julianne Moore (Dr. Alice Howland) Kristen Stewart (Lydia Howland) Alec Baldwin (Dr. John Howland), this film received 10 Oscar awards for best actress and also the BAFTA award - Golden Globe - Screen Actors Guild, among other important awards.

I really liked this movie because of the subject it deals with, a story of a person with Alzheimer's; because my grandmother is in the process of this sad disease and I love my grandmother and when I saw this movie that talks about the subject I focus on her, because I want to know what awaits us with my grandmother.

This story tells us the sad life of a doctor named Alice Howland and the process of the early development of the disease, a very dramatic movie which made me cry a lot.

Alice is a well-known university professor of linguistics in New York City; just turned 50, married with 3 grown children. Lydia, Anna and Tom. Her husband is a researcher and academic, also like his wife loves his work. She is invited to give a lecture at a university in Los Angeles and while there the first symptom appears, she forgets a word and she takes it as something normal.

When she returns to New York, she goes for a run as she usually did and loses her sense of orientation, she did not know where she was or what she was doing there, after a while she remembers again and returns home, she makes an appointment with a neurologist and he submits her to several tests, she thinks she might have a brain tumor, she tells the doctor about the two incidents she had at the conference and when she was exercising, besides she is forgetting names, places, etc. The doctor diagnoses her with early onset Alzheimer's and the doctor tells Alice's husband that it is a rare type of Alzheimer's to occur in a young woman in her 50's and indicates that it may be hereditary.

She gathers her children together and tells them that she has this disease, they say that they noticed several things like that she greeted her son's friend 2 times in the same night, she tells them that the Alzheimer's she has is a very rare type; that it is hereditary and that one of the 3 of them could inherit it and they decide to get tested and one of her daughters Anna comes out positive for the test.

Watching the movie up to this part I think a lot about my grandmother, she is an old person and asks something many times, she forgets things right away and I would not want the time to come when she does not recognize me. Alice in the meantime faces some at the university, as the students make complaints about the teacher's performance, as they don't understand her at all and she looks lost as to what she is telling them, so she decides not to go back to class, She went to a residence where they confine people with a very advanced disease and gets depressed when she sees the number of women suffering from that disease and starts making a video where she gives herself instructions on how to end her own life and saves that video in a folder which she names butterfly and on her phone she starts to write down the name of her children, the place where she lives, the day of her birthday, etc. She knew perfectly what she would experience, since this disease was advancing very fast.

My grandmother has approximately 4 years with symptoms, forgetfulness and other reactions of the disease.

As described in this movie, this disease progresses very quickly in about two years, the person reaches a total deterioration of their faculties, while the Alzheimer's we know can take much longer to reach its last part, as the movie progresses, the husband and her two older children are drifting away they feel they are losing their mothers in life.

Lydia, however, stays with her mom, even though she was the most reluctant to be closer to her mom, which I applaud because in these cases, it would be very sad to forget a person and not take care of them just because they are going through such a painful stage and because there is no way to stop the progression when they need the love and companionship of their family the most.

Alice struggled tirelessly to not lose herself so quickly and forget, her husband was quite worried and you could see the great love he had for her, the same for her children, but only for one of them would be a priority, her husband was offered a job in another city and she did not want to change cities, because her children and home were in New York.

She had a lady who took care of her and her daughter by video calls, one day she got the video she recorded for herself so that when she forgot everything she would tell herself how to commit suicide, luckily the caregiver interrupted her and she forgot what she was going to do, After several days her husband invites her to lunch and remembered that they were in front of the university where Alice was teaching, her husband comments if she remembers teaching there, Alice answers with a no, so her husband tells her that she was very intelligent and will be the most intelligent person he has ever met, thus praising her, but she was still confused.

After seeing the horrible progress of the disease, he asks Lydia to return home to take care of her mother and at that moment John, her husband, talks to his daughter telling her that he is unable to see his wife in this state, he decides to leave her and moves to Minnesota leaving her in the care of his daughter, in one of his meetings with her mother he talks about a play that she played, but her mother all disoriented responds with the word love.

A film that gives a lot to analyze about life and why we should value it, even in spite of the situation that may arise, life is a gift. A film that I highly recommend.
