A Magical Place Called La Gran Sabana! [Eng-Esp]

Hi People! I don't know how many of you have dreamed of seeing a place and have an internal photo gallery in your memory that you long to fill with your dream trip. Or recreate a moment just as you had imagined it!

I have always dreamed of sitting in a small and cozy Coffee Shop, having a Mocaccino with a good Croissant while my sight is lost in the immensity of the Eiffel Tower. And why not? Wearing a typical Parisian garment, a beret (maybe that makes everyone feel more artistic or French).

And in the background echoing in my ears that characteristic melody of that beautiful French song "La Vie en Rose" by Édith Piaf. It would be inevitable to think of Paris without playing that melody in my head.

Hola Gente! No sé a cuántos de ustedes les ha pasado que sueñan con conocer un lugar y tienen una galería interna de fotos en su memoria que ansian llenar con el tan soñado viaje. O recrear un momento justo como lo habían imaginado!

Yo siempre he soñado con sentarme en una pequeña y acogedora Cafetería, tomando un Mocaccino acompañado de un buen Croissant mientras mi vista se pierde en la inmensidad de la Torre Eiffel. ¿Y xq no? Usando una típica prenda Parisina, una boina (tal vez eso haga sentir a todos más artísticos o franceses).

Y de fondo resonando en mis oídos aquella melodía tan característica de esa hermosa canción francesa "La Vie en Rose" de Édith Piaf. Sería inevitable pensar en París sin reproducir esa melodía en mi cabeza.

And for many passionate people, traveling is like daydreaming, besides being something fundamental in our lives. Well, because yes, this little person here loves to travel! Although I haven't done it enough, or at least not as much as I would like to. But if you ask my family and friends, maybe they would say otherwise.

As for Paris, it will have to keep waiting for me, because the destination we are going to today is not as famous as Paris but I can assure you that it is incredibly beautiful, magical and has nothing to envy Paris (maybe only its croissants).

I'm talking about one of my favorite places in the world and in my beautiful Venezuela, La Gran Sabana!

Y es que para muchos apasionados, viajar, es como soñar despiertos, además de ser algo fundamental en nuestras vidas. Bueno porque sí, a ésta personita de aquí, ¡le encanta viajar! Aunque no lo he hecho lo suficiente, o al menos no tanto como quisiera. Pero si preguntan a mis familiares y amigos, tal vez dirían lo contrario.

En cuanto a París, deberá seguir esperándome, porque el destino al que iremos hoy no es tan famoso como París pero les puedo asegurar que es increíblemente hermoso, mágico y no tiene nada que envidiarle a París (quizás solo sus croissants).

Les hablo de uno de mis lugares favoritos en el mundo y en mi hermosa Venezuela, ¡La Gran Sabana!

It belongs to the Canaima National Park, which is super huge and is also declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, because it is home to one of the oldest soils on the planet such as the Tepuyes (my tourist instinct could not speak without mentioning this detail, excuse me, it's hard to avoid it!) The Gran Sabana is one of its three main tourist attractions, being the most visited by national and of course local tourists, since it is easily accessible, unlike the other two: Angel Falls and Mount Roraima.

Ésta pertenece al Parque Nacional Canaima; el cual es súper inmenso y además está declarado como Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, debido a que en éste se encuentra uno de los suelos más antiguos del planeta como son los Tepuyes (mi instinto turístico no podía hablar sin mencionar este detalle, me disculparán, ¡es difícil evitarlo!) La Gran Sabana es uno de sus tres principales atractivos turísticos, siendo ésta la más concurrida por el turista nacional, y por supuesto el local, ya que es de fácil acceso a diferencia de los otros dos: El Salto Ángel y El Monte Roraima.

But today, we will go into the beautiful and magical Gran Sabana, which as I said: It has nothing to envy to Paris. Of course, every place is unique, but this one holds an incredible beauty and magic that you can feel when you are there, in that precise place. You feel how your eyes can't believe such magnificent beauty and its immensity makes you feel so small, realizing that we are so lucky to be here.

Its beauty surpasses you, perhaps because it is something natural in which the hand of man has not intervened to beautify it, and personally these places amaze and enchant me. So much beauty, so perfect! Believe me when I tell you, many photos do not do it justice.

Pero hoy, nos adentraremos en la hermosa y mágica Gran Sabana, que como dije: ¡No tiene nada que envidiarle a París!. Claro que cada lugar es único pero éste encierra una increíble hermosura y magia, que se puede sentir al estar ahí, en ese preciso lugar. Sientes como tus ojos no se creen tanta magnífica belleza y su inmensidad te hace sentir tan pequeño, comprendiendo que somos tan afortunados por estar aquí.

Su belleza te supera, tal vez por ser algo natural en lo cual no ha intervenido la mano del hombre para embellecerlo, y en lo personal estos lugares me asombran y encantan. ¡Tanta belleza, tan perfecta! Créanme cuando les digo que, muchas fotos no le hacen justicia.

For many years I was able to visit a small part of this immense and majestic place, and I enjoyed to the fullest every little corner I visited, even going there repeatedly.

I had already told you in my previous post (my presentation), that my university studies took place in the border town near La Gran Sabana, Santa Elena de Uairen. That is to say, La Gran Sabana was our playground.

The one we used to go through every weekend or midweek, as long as no work or study obligations stopped us. We enjoyed every free moment to run to the Sabana.

Por muchos años pude recorrer una pequeña parte de este inmenso y majestuoso lugar, y disfrute al máximo cada rinconcito que visite, aún yendo en repetidas ocasiones.

Ya les había dicho en mi post anterior (mi presentación), que mis estudios en la universidad transcurrieron en el poblado fronterizo cercano a La Gran Sabana, Santa Elena de Uairén. Es decir que, La Gran Sabana era nuestro patio de juegos.

Ese que recorríamos cada fin de semana o entre semanas, siempre y cuando ninguna obligación laboral o de estudios nos detuviera. Disfrutábamos cada rato libre para correr hacia la Sabana.

La Sabana; as the locals say, is too extensive to be traveled in a few days, but you can enjoy its main attractions, which are usually those streams and rivers nearby and easily accessible from the main road that connects the town of Santa Elena de Uairén with the rest of the country.

Among them, and the best known, since they are properly signposted, are: Los Rápidos de Kamoirán, El Salto Kama, El Balneario Soroape, La Quebrada Pacheco (Arapan) and La Quebrada de Jaspe. And there are others of medium access, which are not signposted and generally you reach them thanks to the help of a tour guide or with the locals, such as: La Piscina de Pacheco, El Oasis, El Velo de la Novia and Güachara.

La Sabana; cómo decimos los lugareños, es súper extensa para ser recorrida en unos pocos días, pero sí puedes disfrutar de sus principales atractivos que, por lo general, son aquellas quebradas y ríos cercanos y de fácil acceso desde la carretera principal que comunica el poblado de Santa Elena de Uairén con el resto del país.

Entre ellos, y los más conocidos, ya que están señalizados debidamente, son: Los Rápidos de Kamoirán, El Salto Kama, El Balneario Soroape, La Quebrada Pacheco (Arapan) y La Quebrada de Jaspe. Y existen otros de acceso medio, que no están señalizados y generalmente llegas a ellos gracias a la ayuda de un guía turístico o con los locales, cómo: La Piscina de Pacheco, El Oasis, El Velo de la Novia y Güachara.

You will also find beautiful places but difficult to access (this is due to the terrain, as there are no roads built to these sites, and it is only possible to get there in 4x4 vehicles, even more on those rainy days due to the mud that is created), these places or the best known and closest are: El Salto Aponwao and Las Cortinas de Yuriani. Where in the same way you could only get there through a guide or a local friend.

The truth is that each place is equally or more amazing than the previous one. By the way, so that you are not caught by surprise in a dip, you should know that its waters are generally cold. But for those of us who prefer it that way, this is no inconvenience.

También encontrarás hermosos lugares pero de difícil acceso (esto debido al terreno, ya que no existen vías construidas hacía dichos sitios, y solo es posible llegar en vehículos 4x4, aún más en aquellos días lluviosos debido al fango que se crea), estos lugares ó los más conocidos y cercanos son: El Salto Aponwao y Las Cortinas de Yuriani. Dónde de igual forma solo podrías llegar a través de un guía o algún amigo lugareño.

Lo cierto es que cada lugar es igual o más sorprendente que el anterior. Por cierto, para que nos los agarre de sorpresa en un chapuzón deben saber que sus aguas generalmente son frías. Pero para quienes lo preferimos así, esto no es ningún inconveniente.

It is important to note that La Gran Sabana is an indigenous area, so you will find many indigenous communities, obviously, in almost every tour. In this area alone there are many ethnic groups, but the most prominent and closest to the people (and with which we most relate to the locals) are three; very similar but with certain notable differences even in their speech, which are: The Taurepanes, the Kamaracotos and the Arecunas.

But the truth is that I saw them all the same hehe, however my friends "pemones" (as they usually call each other, and therefore this is how we refer to them when the occasion deserves it), insisted that it was not so.

By the way, we called them "pemones", and they called us "criollos". Of course (for those who are wondering), we all called each other by our first names. Those terms are only used for general references!

Es importante resaltar que La Gran Sabana es una zona indígena, por lo cual encontrarán muchas comunidades indígenas, obviamente, en casi todos los recorridos. Es que solo en esta zona existen muchísimas etnias, pero las más resaltantes y cercanas al pueblo (y con la que más nos relacionamos los locales) son tres; muy similares pero con ciertas diferencias notables aún su habla, que son: Los Taurepanes, los Kamaracotos y los Arecunas.

Pero la verdad es que yo les veía a todos igualitos jeje, sin embargo mis amigos "pemones" (cómo entre ellos se suelen llamar, y por lo tanto es así como nos referimos a ellos cuando la ocasión lo amerita), insistían en que no era así.

Por cierto, nosotros le decíamos pemones, y ellos nos decían criollos. Claro que (para quienes se lo estén preguntando), todos nos llamábamos por nuestros nombres. Esos términos solo se usan para hacer referencias generales!

Despite being "modernized" (because they are already civilized!), they still preserve a large part of their indigenous culture, such as their language, beliefs and way of life. The latter is more accentuated in the more distant communities.

If you ever visit La Gran Sabana, do not miss the opportunity to not only observe these communities, but also to taste some of their typical dishes such as a good Tuma with its respective cassava, accompanied by a small dose of kumache (especially if you do not tolerate spicy), and finally drink some Kachire. This can be done in the community of San Francisco (just where the road crosses the town).

Estos a pesar de estar "modernizados" (¡porque civilizados ya son!), aún preservan gran parte de su cultura autóctona cómo; su lengua, creencias y forma de vida. Está última, está más acentuada en las comunidades más lejanas.

Sí algún día visita La Gran Sabana, no pierdas la oportunidad de no solo observar estás comunidades, sino también de degustar algunos de sus platos típicos cómo; un buen Tuma con su respectiva casabe, acompañado de una pequeña dosis de kumache (sobretodo si no toleras el picante), y finalmente beber algo de Kachire. Esto lo puedes hacer al paso en la comunidad de San Francisco (justo por dónde atraviesa la carretera hacia el pueblo).

There is no doubt that La Gran Sabana is full of adventures, and it will take more than a few days to get to know it. However, with only one day you will be able to enjoy it.

I must confess that every time my eyes gazed at it all, I was ecstatic with such beauty and immensity. It made me feel so small (although I always have been, hahaha).

I firmly believe that La Gran Sabana is one of the places that will always amaze me. Which reminds me of a saying that was well known by the locals, same that I verified as something so real; in the village we used to say: La Sábana, is magical; it enchants you and traps you to stay and always come back; or it rejects you and no matter how hard you try or want, you never come back.

Sin duda alguna La Gran Sabana está llena de aventuras, y se necesitará más que algunos pocos días, para conocerla. Más sin embargo con solo un día podrás disfrutarla.

Debo confesarles que cada vez que mis ojos contemplaban todo aquello, quedaban extasiados con tanta belleza e inmensidad. Me hacía sentir tan chiquitita (aunque siempre lo he sido jajaja).

Creo firmemente que La Gran Sabana es uno de los lugares que siempre me maravillaran. Lo que me recuerda un dicho que era muy conocido por los lugareños, mismo que comprobé como algo tan real; en el pueblo acostumbramos a decir: La Sabana, es mágica; te encanta y te atrapa para quedarte y siempre volver; o te rechaza y por más que lo intentes o quieras, jamás vuelves.
