In search of happiness

So, what were we talking about, again? The dad asked his daughter who seemed to be lost in thought. He did not want to burden her with his thoughts and opinions. He knew that she was capable of handling any situation.

She turned to look at him and saw beyond the expression in his eyes. She could see the years of hurt and the pain that could not be erased. She did not want him to realize that she could understand all of it or some of it at least. She just wanted him to think of her as the small girl who used to sit on his lap and read fairy tales.

Life had become so complicated as a grown-up and she wished she had never grown up but at that time, she wanted to be all so tall and have a deep voice. Her voice still sounded feeble and so ladylike that she hated it herself but could do nothing about it.

Anyways, she got up and went about preparing breakfast for them. They ate silently, listening to the radio news. She had bought a radio set recently. It was a surprise gift for her dad and he loved listening to the news. The reception was not so clear like in the previous decades or maybe they were too far away. She couldn't make sense of it.

Their lives had taken a turn for worse when their business partner had cheated them and they had to sell their city house and move into the village. The villagers were happy and helped them relocate. The peace and quiet seemed a little too daunting at first but slowly, they grew accustomed to it and loved the silence. No more neighbors coming in to ask for a cup of sugar or some such thing. They had been helpful of course but everyone was gossip hungry and she avoided such gossips.

The villagers were more humble and pure. Of course, there were exceptions like the 'vulture' (nickname of course) who did not like to spare those whom he did not like and looted them. There were many people like him but they did not bother troubling others because they were afraid of the police of course.

She turned to her dad and talked to him about constructing a two-room shed-type building which she wanted to dedicate to the villagers. It would have books to read, an indoor game area, and a space dedicated to social activities for the members of the village. Her dad thought that it was a brilliant idea. He agreed to donate a television set for all. She was happy that he agreed to her idea. The books that they had bought for themselves were also gathering dust and she did not want them to get hit by termites.

All the books that were selected were packed and placed neatly on the racks. A carrom board set was also bought. Somebody had donated tables and chairs and a few others had pooled and donated a cycle and so on.

The shed was dedicated to the village without any special inauguration but the villagers would not hear of it and decided to cook food together and let everyone partake in it.

The dad and daughter looked at each other.
Happiness was in giving and sharing with others and not just grabbing everything for oneself.
