Interesting idea. I didn't buy as many packs as you and am sitting on my packs for two reasons:
- I am getting airdrop points for holding packs and expected points for cards after oppening are less
- I am also waiting for all legendary summoners to be released so that I have a chance at those.

100% your approach is better! This is a personal and fun challenge/experiment as I have never opened packs before so taking the losses as part of the learning experience :)
