Photoblog - Back To The Second Home

Hello everyone!

Here I continue my story, I'm just a blogger and I write what happens to me, Wednesday Walk: Around The City Park, where I mentioned that I would be somewhere else the next day.
And indeed, the very next day I went back to my second home, the beach of Sveti Duh on the island of Pag, where I have a caravan.
It was not exactly a walk (I hope the admin, @tattoodjay won't be too grumpy 😐), it was a drive of some three hours, and in between, I took intensive photos.

So this is more of a photoblog, I also posted some photos during the trip on the Ecency Discord, (I even posted a short quiz there, so congratulations again to @beeber for guessing correctly and winning the prize of 1 HIVE + 100 @ecency POINTS!) 👏

I apologize in advance, the photos may not be the best, because I took them while driving, through the windscreen.
Later, when I arrived, I even thought what an idiot I am for taking photos while driving and uploading them to Discord ... really, I DO NOT RECOMMEND this to anyone, it could even cause an accident with unpredictable consequences ...

Well, now it's what it is.

📷 😎 📷

I set off at about 8 am, and after 15 minutes I arrived at the Croatian border, strangely there was no traffic, maybe because it was the middle of the week?

I keep driving on an empty highway ...

And the first sea view, Kvarner Bay, with the island of Krk in the background...

This part of Kvarner bay is very touristic, you can see part of Opatija, a very old tourist center from the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which ruled these parts of the world until the First World War...

Follow the highway to Rijeka, Croatia's second-largest port, many Slovenians still live here, when I was younger (in ex-Yugoslavia) we used to come here for parties and concerts, half an hour's drive from home...

📷 😎 📷

The bypass goes around the city of Rijeka, and as a point of interest, there are six tunnels on this bypass...this is the first...

📷 😎 📷

📷 😎 📷

📷 😎 📷

View of the Bay of Bakar, at the end of Rijeka and the highway crossing, the highway goes all the way around this bay for about 15 kilometers.

After 10 kilometers view from the other side of Bakar Bay.

📷 😎 📷

The highway ends and I'm driving towards Crikvenica.

The town of Crikvenica and the reflection of my yellow cap (again, idiot me, I could have moved it somewhere else, but I didn't remember until later...)

Traffic is a bit heavier, I'm driving in a convoy towards Novi Vinodolski.

I'm arriving in Novi Vinodolski, with the Velebit massif already visible in the background, which will continue to follow me ...

Look, boats, a small marina in the city center :)

📷 😎 📷

📷 😎 📷

Now the landscape is completely changed, rocks and abysses all around, the road is very curvy ...

📷 😎 📷

📷 😎 📷

📷 😎 📷

Well, now it's opened up a bit again, on the left side is Velebit, which goes on for another 100 kilometres, Velebit is also a National Park, Southern Velebit, or Paklenica National Park, is very popular for extreme climbing, quite a few of my friends come here regularly to climb ... and on the right side you can see the island of Rab in the background ...

📷 😎 📷

📷 😎 📷

I'm coming to Senj ...

The town of Senj has a very interesting history.
In the Middle Ages, it was the only free city in the northern Adriatic that was not under Venice. However, it was under the patronage of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which gave the inhabitants, the Uskoks, who were Christian refugees from the Ottoman Empire, land, so that they owned the land and more or less survived by plundering the merchant ships that sailed by.
As most of the merchant ships were owned by the Venetian Republic, the Venetians had had enough. This was the reason for the so-called Uskok War between Venice and the Habsburgs.

The symbol of Senj is Nehaj Fortress, built in 1558.
There is now a museum with a rich historical collection, and if anyone is passing by, I highly recommend a visit.

📷 😎 📷

Let's keep going, the peaks of Velebit still in the background, two motorcyclists in front of me, 60 kilometers to go ...

A small and pleasant place, Holy Juraj, we sometimes stop here because one of the tavernas has very good (and cheap) seafood ...

The island of Rab is still on the horizon, and the ferry turnoff is close by...

📷 😎 📷

Croatia's coastline is really rugged, with lots of small islets, coves, beaches accessible only by boat...

In the background, the island of Pag ...

I'm turning and descending steeply towards the ferry ...

Oh shit, I'm about five minutes late ... the 12 o'clock ferry I was planning to catch has just left ... I wasted time taking photos :(

Two more cyclists ahead of me as I head down the road towards the ferry that has already left ...

The next one in 45 minutes ... well, don't panic, I've found a solution called Velebitsko beer, a very good dark lager from a small brewery :) 😎 🍺 😁

The ferry has arrived ...

I'm on board, and @beeber has guessed which car is mine :) 😎

View of the Velebit Canal between the mainland and the island of Pag ... it's usually very windy ...

We are slowly approaching the island, the next ferry to the mainland is waiting ...

Port and 10 kilometers to go :)

I'm moving up again ...

The part of the island that faces the mainland is a complete rocky desert ...

On the other side of the island there is more greenery, but very few trees, and the open sea towards Italy in the background...

The turn-off for the Holy Spirit Beach ... with the mighty Velebit and the Gulf of Pag in the background.

📷 😎 📷

View of the Gulf of Pag and 20 kilometres of coastline and beautiful beaches on both sides of the bay ...

📷 😎 📷

I'm on the coast :)

Finally! My modest second home!
Caravan, canopy, water, electricity, that's all I need for the summer!

My younger son, who has been here for two weeks, is probably at the beach, and I have a few things to do before the end of the week.

But that's another story. 😎

Here's the full route, printscreen of Google Maps.

btw: On Friday when I went back I took a hundreds of photos of the clouds on the way ...

Thanks for your attention!

Lovely scenes! It took us 5 hours to cross that border last year! LOL I hope when we go next month it might be faster.

Is there a way to go through Slovenia from Italy without buying the extra Viginette? It seems crazy to buy for just a few km's!

Ugh, it's peak tourist season, I'm afraid it's going to be the same.
If you don't want a vignette, then you have to get off the motorway when you cross the border from Italy. You can set this in Google maps (and all GPS apps): avoid highways. 😎
