Trabant

A few days ago, I saw this car in a car park. It reminded me of an era that had already passed and I thought to myself that I should document it.
At least for a memory. Where else, if not on the blockchain, where it will be forever! :)

Do you know which car this is?
Well, let me help you, it's a Trabant, one of the most popular small cars in former East Germany. It was manufactured from 1957 to 1991 by VEB SAZ (Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau).

More than 3 million Trabants were produced. This one is probably modified because it is a cabriolet. I am not sure that they also made cabriolets.

It had some advanced features for the time (it was mostly made of plastic and recycled materials, which is more the case now), but overall it became one of the symbols of the fall of East Germany and the whole Eastern Block.

Because it was produced under a state monopoly, and there was no competition, people had to wait even more than ten years for a car.

The original engine was a two-stroke. Experts say the build quality was poor, reliability was terrible, and it was loud, slow, and poorly designed.
This one is obviously well maintained and in driving condition.

Well, no matter what, it's still very interesting for collectors.

Nice, nice. A Trabant appeared briefly in Bridge of Spies, in the part where Tom Hanks is assaulted by a bunch of communist gangsters. Do you have the model and the year of the one you took that picture of?

That's right, I watch the movie. Unfortunately, I don't have the model and date, just saw this car at the parking and catch it.

(Edited)

This is not a stock Trabant. At least the roof is modified. Just saying, for anyone, who do not know. By the way Trabants were also popular in my country (Hungary). They are still popular, as I heard, mostly amongst the young people. I heard that there is a community around old timer cars. They have gatherings, exhibitions and so on.

Yes, agree, it's probably modified and probably the newest one. It's popular for oldtimer cars lovers.
