Water lilies are blooming 🪷
Water lilies are blooming.
Every year, around the same time—somewhere between mid-May and the end of June—water lilies bloom in the pond in the nearby park.

I usually don’t miss the chance to take some photos of them and then post them online.

The large, heart-shaped leaves of the white water lily (Nymphaea alba) float on the water. The beautiful white or pink flower (our region), with a multitude of yellow stamens, is up to 10 cm wide. It hides its thick root in the soft bottom beneath the water, from which it sends up leaves and flower stalks toward the water’s surface.

The water lily is a poisonous aquatic plant. All parts of the plant—leaves, flowers, roots, and seeds—contain calcium oxalate and other toxic substances that can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In dogs and cats, they can also lead to more serious problems.

Yesterday, in the stream that flows into this little lake, I also saw the first snake of the year, a dice snake (Natrix tessellata). It is non-venomous, lives near the water, is a very good swimmer, and hunts small fish.
Summer is definitely here; the water is warm enough even for snakes.

A few more photos that could serve as backgrounds.

And finally, a #waves-short video offering a 360-degree view of the little lake with waterlilies.
