Getting Back to Organzing the Collections I Inherited and bought from my Grandparents

Been putting it off for a long time

I have had a collection from both sides of my grandparents for a long time. I started collecting because of my grandparents and my mother's side. I got some coins from when my grandmother passed away somewhere back in early 2012. It's got me started with coin collecting and buying silver.

Cuz my family knew that I was into collecting coins they told me my other grandmother who could move into a nursing home had a bunch of coins in her safe. I went through and documented to coins in average price and I ended up buying them from her. Luckily for me silver was very cheap at the time somewhere in the 14 to 15 other range so I was able to buy most of the collection without too much of an issue.

I have not sold any part of my other than the large quantity of 40% silver halves that they had. I made it clear when I bought it to all my relatives that I was buying it to sell it at some point and as long as they were okay with it and didn't want to buy it for themselves then I would buy it but I gave them first choice. Since no one else wanted it I got to have it and I actually sold those silver halves on the first silver pump back when it was 25 to $28 a long time ago

Who Doesn't Love some Half Dollars

The only thing I've made it through in the past two nights was the 90% silver halves from my father's side. Just over a sheet of silver halves and I believe they're all good to go. I have put a lot more coins into 2x2s, and some of them are labeled with what side they came from but I don't have the coin labels on the front. I ran out of pages and I ran out of printer paper so I was at a temporary halt until Amazon delivers some more supplies. Either way I think it's great when you start to fill up pages and pages of silver halves
Especially considering most of my halves are in tubes.

A really Great Mix of stuff

Both sides of my grandparents had a really nice collection of older coins. There was no rhyme or reason as to what they had other than they must have had some coins that they knew more valuable, or older, or they came from their parents or grandparents or uncles that they had just put away in a jewelry box we're safe for some reason. No one knew what the stories were behind them other than that they were now old enough to be collectible.

I think it's really nice when you come across these smaller collections like this that have a huge variety of taking the two interested into other things. This is how I became aware of and started collecting 3 cent pieces. My grandfather had one I had no idea what it was, after some quick internet searches I found out there was a new domination of coin I'd never heard of and off to the races I went wanting to collect them.

Keep this separate from my collection. Stuff from the family is marked what family it is from.

My philosophy is that these will be handed down to my kids and then they can decide what to do with them. If I get any coin collections from other family members like my Aunt who said she has a few points or my parents who may or may not also have old coins they've collected then I will do the same thing with those and I'll edit to the family tree of numismatics. This will be kept completely separate for my own personal collection and will not be sold under any circumstances unless we're facing bankruptcy or losing a house etc etc. I think it's important to keep some of these things as heirlooms potentially, well maybe other people won't appreciate them as much as I do it does give me a relatively laid-back hobby to put them into flips in the store then. Not a lot of bad can come from coin collecting other than the extreme cost of some points.

So much more to go

As you can see by the box in the empty flips there's a ton more to go. I have a lot of coins in tubes that need to be put into flips and storing pages, as well as a bunch of coins already and flips that need to be finished off and put an order. That's not even touching some of the tokens, foreign stuff and the paper which is an absolute disaster. There is some foreign and more paper but it's all in really bad condition and I'm not sure the best way to start or display it or anything.

Anyone else starting a family tree of new asthmatic collections.

Anyone else doing something similar, or am I the only one who is documenting the collection and where they came from and trying to pass it down to their kids.?

That's an amazing collection! It's great that they had such a nice gift to pass on. It's a lot of work to organize but it's a lot of fun! Thanks for sharing, that is a great collection!

Thank you, I know I really enjoyed getting it passed down, hopefully kids do too. Something they look at know it was used and owned by generations before them. I think most of the enjoyment so far has come from putting in the work to organize it. Makes you go through piece by piece and look and touch each one. !PIZZA

Nothing better than just passing a box of precious metals down the line. Best part is, only they will know. My son would love to stack silver and gold.... BUT Only if he spends dad's money, not his own. He guards is money like a goblin. !PIZZA

I’ve been bringing boxes back home from my private security place for over a year now sorting and condensing. Even selling some stuff. I’ve totally changed my strategy on things now. I did an experiment last summer trying to sell semi numismatic coins to LCS’s, and pawn shops. The offers were eye openingly bad. If you are interested I can share the info

Hit me up on discord, would love to see what you are experiencing. I have never tried to sell back, but it sounds like they are offering you half or less! I think this is why I am very slowly buying my personal collection vs going big, no one in my family would know what to do with it.

The only selling I have done has been peer to peer where everyone got a fair price.

I could easily spend many hours I don't yet have putting a collection like this into some sense of order. I've been document my silver coins slowly and hopefully pass it on to my kids later.
