Every year a local small town has a Chalkfest art contest the same time as the local community celebration. Its not quite a fair, but we do have a parade, rides, games, food, 5k race, etc. The Chalk fest is one of our favorite things to go see. It is amazing to see what people are able to create with just sidewalk chalk.

We went a couple of times this year. once when they area bout half way through the time limit and once when they were all completed. They are allowed to start at 8am and they can work on them until 4 or 5pm if I remember correctly. While that seems like a longtime, these paces are super involved and pretty large. They take up a piece of concrete that has to be 4 feet by 6 feet?

This year were got to watch some of the artists working, and noticed they were using water to blend the chalk into the side walk and move the color lines I was used to seeing. They sometimes wet the chalk and other times they used a damp sponger to color in the porous concrete.

I believe it cost $30 to enter, with the winners getting a cash price. We are still waiting to hear who won.

I don't know about every Artist, but we did see a few working on them. It was a ton of hard work, many of them looked hot, tired and running out of time!. In prior years, some where able to have their art stick around for weeks afterwards. Not sure if they sprayed them with hair spray or something else, but they were still around even after the rain.

Either way it is really impressive to see what they can do, especially with chalk on concrete, its not a easy medium to work with!. After watching them we walked home and decided to do our own contest, with each participant getting ice cream at the end so we could all be winners.

It was a lot harder than I thought, and used a ton of chalk for small areas trying to get it to color in. Never noticed how much texture there was in my sidewalk until I tried to make it be a solid color with chalk.

It was fun, and we all won some ice cream, the neighbors all had a laugh trying to guess who drew what art, and fend off the kids trying to persuade them to pick theirs as the best

This was made by a very young early, had to be in 3rd or 4th grade?

This is a family favorite because the kids are just starting to get into my collection of Calvin and Hobbs from when I was a kid.
