It's the age of remakes, reboots, spinoffs, sequels, prequels.
This seemingly "recycling" of old television and film material can often seem a lack of quality and original ideas, and that's often what happens.
Sometimes, however, some productions manage to surprise us.
Just think of Fargo or the spinoffs of Breaking Bad and The Good Wife (Better Call Saul and The Good Fight) to understand how often the bar can be very high.
A few days ago HBO aired the first episode of "Perry Mason", and it was a resounding success.
That's him, the TV lawyer par excellence.
55 minutes that revolutionized the way you think about Perry Mason from now on.
You may or may not like it but this "recycling" operation seems to have all the credentials to be a "central" TV series in 2020.
To confirm this, just take a look at the cast, made up of winners and multiple nominees for Emmy and Golden Globe in the recent past.
Matthew Rhyis (The Americans) is Perry Mason. A Mason light years away from what we remember from photographs and videos taken over the years. A cynical, poor, violent and gloomy but also very tormented, fragile and human Perry Mason.
During the film 2 other great actors appear, though in passing, like Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and John Litgow (The Crown).
And then Shea Wingham, Patrick and others.
At the helm is a director and author as experienced as Tim Van Patten (The Sopranos, Game Of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire). And it's from Boardwalk Empire that the series seems to draw more references. Dark colors, a background violence that is exalted by bloody images and not for the heart patients, but combined with a general slowness of the staging but not of the story that, on the contrary, evolves very fast.
It's an excellent product this new "Perry Mason", a product that has certainly stunned the audience given the record audience ratings on HBO.

Al timone un regista e autore navigato come Tim Van Patten ( The Sopranos, Game Of Thrones e Boardwalk Empire). Ed è proprio da Boardwalk Empire che la serie sembra attingere maggiori riferimenti. Colori scuri, una violenza di sottofondo che viene esaltata da immagini cruente e non per i malati di cuore unite però ad una generale lentezza della messa in scena ma non del racconto che , anzi, evolve velocissimo.
E' un prodotto ottimo questo nuovo "Perry Mason", prodotto che ha certamente sbalordito il pubblico visti gli ascolti record su HBO.
