Exploring Some Art Styles - Part 5
Today I’m bringing you another nine art styles and sample images using those styles. I have generated the images using the same prompt and only adding the art style to the prompt.
Colour Field
Colour Field emerged in the 1940s and 1950s with its use of large areas of flat, unmodulated color focusing on the experience of the colour itself. The focus was on creating a sense of depth and space through colour and composition.
Colour Field is closely associated with the broader movmement of Abstract Expressionism which emerged in the mid-20th century. That movement on the use of abstract forms and gestural brushstrokes.
Artists applied the paint in thin layers, allowing the texture of the canvas to show through, and sought to create a sense of depth and space through the use of color and composition
Colour Field influenced Minimalism and later movements like Lyrical Abstraction and Post-Painterly Abstraction.
Hard-edge Painting
Hard-edge painting emerged in the 1950s and 1960s using sharp, defined edges and geometric shapes to create highly structured and precise works seeking to convey a sense of order and clarity. It influenced the Op Art and Pop Art movements.
Lyrical Abstraction
Lyrical Abstraction emerged in the 1940s and 1950s with its use of its use of expressive, gestural brushstrokes and a focus on the emotional and poetic qualities of color and form. It often used a broader colour palette than earlier movements.
Lyrical Abstraction is a form of abstract art considered to be a reaction to the geometric and intellectual rigor of movements like Color Field and Hard-edge painting. It sought to convey the poetry and emotion of nature and the human experience through the use of color and form.
It had an influence on Action painting, and later movements like Neo-Expressionism, and Process Art.
Systems Art
Systems Art emerged in the 1960s and 1970s with its focus on systems, processes, and procedures used to create the artwork. The broader art movement, conceptual are emerging around the same time focused on the idea or concept behind the artwork, rather than the artwork itself.
Seeking to make the process or the system a central part of the artwork; mathematical systems, scientific processes, and other forms of systems were used to create the works. The art often focused on the relationships between forms, colors, shapes and how they interacted with one another
Systems Art had influence on Minimalism, Process art, and later movements like Post-Minimalism and Conceptual art.
Environmental Art
Environmental Art emerged in the 1960s and 1970s with focus on the relationship between art and the natural environment. It's created in response to the environment. It often uses natural materials and the manipulation of natural landscapes that would change over time as the environment changes.
Land art, earthworks and ecological art are some of the forms of environmental art and it has influenced Land art, and later movements like Eco-art and Social practices.
Video Art
Video Art emerged in the 1960s and 1970s with its use of video to create works of art using technology like: cameras, monitors, and projectors, to create moving images
Video art is a form of time-based art. The moving image is the most important aspect of the work. Works were experimental, conceptual and often challenged traditional art forms.
Video artists sought to explore the possibilities by creating interactive, immersive and often multi-channel (played on multiple screens at once) works.
Video Art influenced Performance art, and later movements like Media art, and Virtual reality.
Installation Art
Installation Art emerged in the 1960s and 1970s with it's use of various forms of art including sculpture, painting and performance to create large-scale immersive and interactive artworks intended to be experienced in a specific location.
The surrounding space was often manipulated to create a particular atmosphere or environment.
Installation Art had an influence on Conceptual art, Performance art and later movements like Site-specific art, and relational art. It expanded the way art is experienced opening up new possibilities for art forms.
Constructivism
Constructivism emerged in the early 20th century as a form of abstract art emphasizing the use of the machine and technology as a means of creating art. Its considered to be a reaction to the decorative and ornamental nature of the earlier art movements
Constructivism often used geometric shapes and industrial materials to create works that were functional and had a strong emphasis on the use of machine and technology. The goal was to create works free from the traditional art forms, and reflective of the modern world.
It had an influence on De Stijl, and later movements like Bauhaus and the Russian avant-garde and an impact on design, architecture and graphic design
Suprematism
Suprematism was originated by Kazimir Malevich in the early 20th century. He sought a new art form to reflect the modern world and its values.
Suprematism is a form of abstract art with an emphasis on the use simple geometric shapes like: squares, circles and rectangles to express spiritual and emotional ideas and qualities of colour and form.
It had an influence on Constructivism and De Stijl as well as on the development of abstract art and the use of geometric shapes in art.
