It's the Journey That Matters, Even If You Fail

There is a common saying, "Nothing beats a failure but a try." We should never be afraid to take risks and try new things, even if we’re unsure of the outcome.

When Georgina was in college, she’d always dreamed of becoming a successful business owner. She worked hard to get good grades and complete her degree. Upon graduation she sought out opportunities for her to start her own company.

At first, the business went well. She had a solid business plan and a few promising leads. It was a good start. Then she started to encounter successive obstacles. It seemed like no matter what she did, she couldn't get her business out of the starting gate.

She needed growth to survive. Discouragement and feelings of failure set in. She considered throwing in the towel and moving on, even maybe getting a J-O-B.

There was a spark inside though. This had been her dream. The idea of giving up was more than she wanted to entertain. She squared her shoulders and decided to jump back into her business with a do or die effort.

She pushed hard, even when it seemed hopeless. Dreams are worth fighting for. Slowly, ever so slowly, the business got some traction. The traction built to momentum and the entrepreneurial success Georgina had dreamed for started to happen for her.

Life is a constant lineup of challenges and opportunities for growth. Dreams direct our attention where we weant to go, but like Georgina, dreams don’t mean you can avoid the challenges or the need for growth.

When the effort starts to get overwhelming we become tested. Which is stronger, the drive to reach your dream or the desire to give up and change course?

It’s never an easy answer. Sometimes it becomes necessary to change course, chase other dreams. Figuring out when it’s necessary or if it’s just giving up too soon.

The diamond prospector in Russell Conwell’s “Acres of Diamonds” gave up just before he found the diamonds he sought. You definitely don’t want to be like him. You also don’t want to be foolhardy and not give in until there is totally no choice.

It’s important to remember that true growth and progress often come from pushing ourselves beyond our comfort zone and trying things that are new and unfamiliar. It’s natural to fear failure and hesitate taking risks.

Failure is part of life and is part of how we learn and grow. Putting our all into our effort is what truly matters. When you put your all into an effort, failure or success doesn’t matter. Be proud of the effort.

It’s not the outcome, it’s the journey and the effort that matters. Valuable lessons are learned and skills are learned or sharpened when the effort is your best.

When next faced with a challenge or opportunity for growth, embrace the journey, give it your all and enjoy the ride. You never know what amazing things may come from it.
