Whispers Through the Boughs: The Eternal Odyssey of Our Tree of Life

The word “odyssey” originated in Homer’s poem telling the story of Odysseus’s ten year sojourn home after the Trojan War. While someone in ancient Greece wrote the “Odyssey”, Homer and the Trojan War are both constructs of mythology. There is considerable debate if they are literary constructs or based on actual facts.

Odysseys usually involve a journey either in the real world or internally. It will take time and weave its way through challenge, setbacks, triumps and finally a return to tell the tale. Odysseys are common to most cultures, many have their own traditions and tales of epic journeys.

Have you ever looked closely at a mature tree? We find some branches are thick and dominant in the pattern of the tree. Some show signs of having been bent to almost breaking and have healed enough to be a part of the infrastructure. Other branches hang broken, attached by the outer bark to the whole, almost like its waiting for the wind to take it away.

From the moment we’re born the first delicate stems of our life tree start to form. As we move through each stage of life, the trunk takes form, branches of all sizes and conditions are formed. The odyssey of our life takes the tree in many directions, the pattern growing larger with each passing stage. The wind, from gentle breezes to raging storms, picks up our stories and carries them across the ages.

Imagine if when our physical body died, releasing our spirit back to energy, that it’s parting gift was to drop a seed to grow our tree of life above our remains. What a beautiful visual, new forests instead of somber headstones telling of our odyssey through life.
