I Wanted It And I Knew I Didn't Need It

Once upon a time, I was broke. Broke to me means having no money to spend outside of the necessities. I want to share my story of when I was broke in this post as well as my guilty pleasure spending during the time I was finally able to have a small budget for spending.

The Time I Had No Money
This is no joke. There was a time in my life where I had no money. I was barley getting by. Long story short, I had an argument with my parents when I was eighteen years old. They told me if I didn't want to follow the house rules, then I should move out so I was a bit angry at the time so I said Ok I'll move out. I'm the type of person that likes to keep their word so I actually did it.

Moving out was tough and eye opening. I barely had any money saved but I needed to pay rent, gas, food and anything else that I wanted except for college which my parents paid for since they wanted me to keep studying. It was quite bad the first few months. I literally had no money; I had to skip meals and there were days where I didn't eat at all. I remember a time when the day I had to pay rent to came but I didn't have the money so I ended up telling the couple I rented the room from and they said it was okay. They were super nice to me and I would end up paying them later.

The Guilty Pleasure
I think everyone has a guilty pleasure in their spending. Something that they would buy even though they barely have any money. For me, that was on snacks and video games. I love snacks and it was something that I didn't need since I already have a lunch and dinner. Snacks actually add up to cost quite a lot if I look back at all the chips I bought and Pocky back during the time I was broke. I probably spent a few thousands on these snacks over the 3-4 years when I moved out.

Another thing I had a guilty spending on was League of Legends skins. Between this and the snacks, I think I regret spending money on this game. It was a total waste of money for these in game cosmetics that can't really carry on to anything in real life or outside of the game. To be honest, I also had a love and hate relationship with this game. This game was super toxic because people were raging and being toxic whenever someone played poorly. Despite all this, I still loved playing it which made me crazy and spend unnecessary money.

I think the conclusion that should be drawn from my post is that we should try not to waste money on guilty pleasures. In the end, it's just a waste of money and there would be better ways to spend that money. I wish I saved and spent that money to invest into crypto back then but oh well there would be a lot of things for everyone to wish they did in the past if they could go back in time.

To be honest, I still do buy snacks now and then but it's nowhere near as bad as the time I was broke. To be fair, I would also consider myself more stable and I have a decent savings already so it's ok for me to enjoy some snacks. As for spending on gaming, luckily now I'm into web3 so most things I buy in web3 games can easily be sold in the marketplace meaning I could get my money back or even more money than I started with.

I know I have read your story of how you left the house angrily and had to fend for yourself. The truth is, no matter how broke we are, there are some guilty pleasures we cannot deprive ourselves of but it is important and necessary to minimize them and channel the money into something more tangible.

wow that was fast O.O. I didn't even post in promotion and you already commented here hehe. Thank you.

Exactly you are spot on about that. We need to control the money and truly spend it wisely but of course it's ok to buy into the guilty pleasures but it needs to be at a minimum like u said!

Have a good evening princess; ; i will prob comment on a few others and sleep

Talk to me directly when it comes to snacking, more responsibilities now as a mother sort of curb that leisure spending of mine, I still do once in a while though.

Glad your parent did not cut off your study fees, you would have drop out from brokeness, hope you are good with your parents now?

Well children are expensive from what i heard ;x. I don't have one and probably not any time soon as I am aware. If it did happen tho i would probably be even more strict with how i spend my money since as u said its more responsibility and commitment

Yes I was always ok with them haha. Just didn't live with them only after I moved out. Suffered a bit but that was the price of freedom I guess.

We all have out guilty pleasures and sometimes they can have a great hold on us but if we can afford them it’s not going to make a big dent on our finances.

However being broke and always conforming to your guilty pleasures comes with its own kind of torture.

But once we grow past them emotionally and sustain ourselves financially enough to say No when we want, then, they won’t be able to affect us on a larger scale.

Agreed. I'm at the point where it doesn't make a big dent but I will still control myself as i would prefer to use the money to invest.

Amen to this as well. It's like a shortwhile of happiness but it comes to bite back over time and in the future u will look back and be like wow why did i succumb to these guilty pleasures

sorry I went to bed. Just woke up. yes it's part of hive learners.

This is the prompt.

Being Broke

We all have experienced being broke at one time or the other, yet there are some things that we just can't keep from ourselves. What is that thing that no matter how broke we are, we'll always go ahead to buy it? This does not include necessary bills we need to pay, just pleasure spendings that being broke can't keep us from. Please share with us.

As I've gotten older I find that I become more and more frugal and rarely waste money on anything to the point of being accused of being stingy by friends. There are only a few things in life that I think are worth spending a lot of money on, the rest of it we are tricked into wasting money by commercialism.

I too have spent money on skins in games and I cringe when I think about it now. I will not make that mistake again. :)

What are the few things you speak of. YES marketing is strong and targets our impulses its truly horrible but thats what they get paid to do. It's really well done how things are sold to us in commercials etc but it's ok I think I've started to see thru all these as the years gone by.

Lol how much money u spent on skins? I think I probably have over 1kUSD worth which si quite a lot of money to be fair.

wow, your money spent on skins is insane. I spent about maybe $30 total. You are a nutter.

I think that computers, houses, athletic shoes, and maybe a kind of food that you really love every now and then are the only things in life that are worth paying a premium for.

Taking such kind of action needs courage and I think it's not an easy decision to take but you took it and that means you belong to a brave person. I think taking such kind of action would be very hard for me.

I never spend a single penny on gaming and I always thought it was a waste of money and those thoughts helped me to not spend money for games. Maybe I am lucky in this case.

Whatever I think you learned a lesson from your experience.

Nothing to feel bad. I believe that if you spend money on gaming, then you might earn money for gaming also.
I always tried my best to not waste money and save money but still, I can't say I never wasted money. I think I feel I wasted money on buying data pack only but at the current time, I feel I am not wasting it because using the data pack I am trying to earn.

It not like that. If I go in a restaurant then I won't need a wifi because I would mostly focus on taking food. Outside means on transport and while I keep moving.

The way you behave politely with your friends including me , it never seemed that you were so angry at the age of 18.
Anyway, now you are not unemployment and you can carry on your extravagant, ofcourse you will not do that as now you are a responsible mature youth.
