All I Know About Halloween

My knowledge about halloween started in adulthood, we were not exposed to a season known as halloween in Nigeria, and unfortunately it's not celebrated, except by a few individuals who probably have been exposed to such an event. I heard the word "treat or trick" first on this platform and I wondered what it was until I had to search the internet and I realized it was a usual phrase for the Halloween season.

I later realized halloween is a celebration that is observed on the 31st of October yearly to celebrate the death of all saints(hallows), martyrs, and faithful departed. This is often done by decorating or painting scary objects that look like a ghost or the dead. There are many theories around the Halloween Holiday, some believe it was the celtic celebration which is related to pagan worship, another group of people believe it was a Christian holiday.

Halloween signifies the first day of allhallowtide, and is observed by christians and non-christians around the world. Halloween is celebrated with trick or treat, costume parties, making jack-o-lanterns, lightning bonfires, etc. It seems to be observed through prayers, fasting , and attending church service. Even though this is not observed in Nigeria, and none of these activities is done or considered except for some businesses that seem to mark the day with certain decorations.

I had thought halloween was an event to scare people out there when i first learned of it, only to realize it was a way of honoring the saints who were martyrs and many who died in active service. As we celebrated this day, may we remember the sacrifice of the faithful departed.
