Be thankful this isn’t your house….

Afternoon everyone….

I’m currently on a job that has thrown me many curveballs so far. I knew certain things that I’d probably run into. But no where near what I’ve uncovered.

The picture above is the most current issue that I’ve uncovered. What you see is a complete mess. This is not how the house was built originally. The second owners of this house had this “work” done. I use the word “work”, but this is far from a professional job.

This is a master bathroom. The area you see in the original blueprints had a tub in the place that is open. There wasn’t a toilet there either. Aside from seeing it on the prints, I found the area where the toilet was.

The arrangement that I came into was a neo wall shower in the left corner of the picture, the toilet was to the left, and a bidet was to the left of the shower.

Needless to say there’s no way a permit was submitted for any of this work. The plumbing is not done to code, nor the walls, and not the floor joists.

When I took the tile off the walls, which were normal drywall (which is not code). This is what I found.

The walls were infested completely with black mold. It had spread into the subflooring as well. Needless to say this has been a bear of a job.

After taking the vanity out, when I removed the drywall I discovered that they covered the original HVAC vent with just the drywall. They carved out part of the studding and just put a vent at another part of the wall. Obviously that isn’t code either.

Needless to say I have my work cut out for me……

I hope your day is better then mine.

These walls are looking very bad. You are right, it very hard to fix this issue.

It’s beyond rough. To me it doesn’t look like any professional in any way. There’s just to much stupid shit. My guess it that it was a friend of the family kind of person. Oh I can do that for you cheap. Well this is the end result. What a shame, but good thing I found it all or bigger problems would’ve happened down the road no doubt.

Damn. Are the homeowners truly surprised, fake surprised, or owning up to doing it/knowing it was done wrong?

It’s not the current homeowners, they bought the house less then two years ago. I’ve uncovered so much stuff they want me to do a bunch more work.

My best bud just dumped 350K into a house they bought 5 years ago. All kinds of mold and toxic stuff. Ended up remodeling the whole thing on top of all that. They on paper rich but he won’t buy Gold/Silver or Bitcoin unfortunately!

If the house was built prior to 2004 then I totally get it. All house have issues if you ever open things up.
That sucks for your buddy.

This is at the same level of 'work' in my rental suite before I spent an additional chunk of borrowed cash to get it up to code.

Sorry. Unfortunately it’s in many homes.

This is why hiring people to do work on my house gives me anxiety. You never know if they are f-ing it up and then when a good person shows up to fix the mess…. Bye bye savings! 💸

I can help you with any of that. If you tell me the work you want done I can tell you what to look for.

I’ve cleaned up many a butchery job with my dad but on the electrical side. It’s crazy stuff! I love doing the work though, sad that I don’t get to do these things anymore. It’s great to see the job and work towards cleaning it up and doing it right!

Black mold! That’s bot good! I was outta my place for 6 months last year for a flood and reconstruction. No fun! But no black mold at least!

Wow!I feel for you. That looks to be a mess and more. And the mode there people were living with is scary as well as everything else you said.

I hope things start to go better and you do not have any more surprises!

It’s a mess, but it won’t be for much longer. I could never leave it looking like that. I’ll post the final results hopefully soon. We are currently awaiting a custom shower pan they wanted. It last probably two weeks out still.

Gosh, that is rough!!!
Goodness gracious!
The owners probably chose a contractor who does shortcuts and all. Didn't they check the contractor's work along the way?
