Special request from a valued customer….

Afternoon everyone…..

It’s not like I have any free time these days. A little over a week ago, and long time customer of mine called me with a request. I had told her that I would do it, but that I was currently juggling three different jobs at the same time. Her reply was well when you get a chance.

I’m not the type of guy that likes to make people wait. So in my driving around picking up materials for current jobs, I decided to get all the materials for this requested piece as well.

I came up with a design and made a cut list while eating dinner one night. While I was cutting up materials for a current job, I fit in the materials for this one as well.

The requested item is a mailbox with an open box planter in the back. I’ve done plenty of custom mailboxes over the years, but it’s been a while.

I decided to make the entire thing out of Azek. Azek is a PVC lumber that can be cut and shaped just like wood. The only part that isn’t Azek is the post and crossbar, those are pressure treated lumber.

I cut all the pieces and routed profiles for the custom trim that I decided on. The entire project took about four hours to make, not including the install.

Here is the final product

I decided yesterday morning that I’d go an install it on my way to my girlfriends. They weren’t home, but I installed it anyway. I even filled it with dirt and flowers, and laid a mulch bed around with matching flowers.

I got a call later around 6:30 at night thanking me for the beautiful mailbox set up. I was glad that she liked it.

That’s all for today, I’m currently grouting my tile job.

Beautiful job! I've never used Azek, is it easy to work with?

Thanks. It’s expensive, but it’s pretty close to maintenance free. You have to seal the edges or they get dirty. It cuts and routes well, if you don’t have a dust collection system cut it outside, or you’ll be finding white specs everywhere. I like it for non structural items for outside. I seal the edges and it last forever. I did molding around my entire house outside with it that I designed and made. I sealed the edges and it’s been 12 years still looks brand new.

It is so lovely, @silverd510 ! I wish we had traditional mailboxes in our neighborhood. We have towers, like 10 mailboxes per tower. I guess it is to save time for the mailperson.
