1972 Bahamas Two Dollars Coin - Flamingo

avatar
(Edited)

This was the first Flamingo coin I bought, about 4 years ago. It is a brilliant uncirculated coin. I wanted to get the silver proof, I think it was 1976, but the older coin in much better. And it had the effigy of Elizabeth II that I love!

Flamingos are the National Bird of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. Bahamas continued on with this reverse forever, well to the 1980.

The coin, as designed here, was first minted by the London Mint 1966- 1967, then by the London and Llantrisant Mints in 1970, finally by the Franklin Mint in 1971 to 1973. The succeeding coins from 1974 to 1980 had the Bahamas National arms in the obverse and the two flamingos on the reverse. They stopped minting the silver coins in 1980.

It is made of .925 silver, and a crown size coin at 40.00 mm in diameter, larger than the other coins that I have depicting flamingos. Numismatically, the term "crown-sized" is used generically to describe large silver or cupro-nickel coins of about 40 mm in diameter. Most Commonwealth countries still issue crown-sized coins for sale to collectors.

The engraver for both the obverse and reverse of the coin is Arnold Machin.

Hi, @jlufer! Yes, I am glad to have bought it myself!
You know that flamingos are my favorite birds, for reasons I don't know! Anyway, I came across flamingos while surfing Ebay. And there were three that were BU or Brilliant Uncirculated. I choose this one. I'm glad that I did. Then, I stored it as usual and forgot about it!
Do you know of any country that has coin with a flamingo?
Take care, and have a great weekend!

The crown sized coins look quite vivid. Are they heavy too?

I love the design, with the sunset (or sunrise?) in the background.

Yes, they are standard weight, and quite hefty... almost 30 g, 29.8 to be exact.

That's good then, it will be kinda hard to duplicate. For example through manipulation methods.

I really do like this coin and flamingos in general. I love perusing your collection and all the different ones you have.

What a wonderful way to collect money. :)

Have a great day!

You hit the nail on its head.. you are exactly right!
When one buys gold or silver, he/she (/it/they) is exchanging fiat for real money, thus taking it out of the circulating debt-credit system.
Have a wonderful weekend, @dswigle. I got turned around with all my prescheduled post, I missed #marketfriday!!!

Hmmm......I like a lot of birds, but one that I enjoy seeing is the little 'spritzies' as I call them, that are around in the wintertime here. Even when there is snow on the ground and food is scarce, you can hear them calling to each other as they scurry to and fro.

I like the red cardinal; the state bird of Ohio that I am from. They are not here in Washington state, and it's been almost 30 years since I last saw one in person.

There are many more, but I'd have to think about which is my very favorite. 🤗😘💕🌸

Your two dollar Elizabeth II Flamingo coin has stored very well for four years in the airtight container @silversaver888 , Beautiful satin finish!!! This is a very popular effigy of Queen Elizabeth on the Obverse on this coin!😀

It's wild to think about the silver content in the circulation coins back in the day, that's a really beautiful coin I really like sterling I find they are a bit more resilient than lower silver content coins

This is the highest silver content of a long time ago.
It is really great! But resiliency is not something I consider in buying silver or gold coins. Just get the highest percentage silver or gold you can!

The two dollar Flamingo is the best looking one between the Flamingo coins in my opinion :)
