2024 Canadian Silver Maple Leaf

The Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coin in 2024 is perhaps among the most significant today among stackers and coin enthusiasts. Why so? The Royal Canadian Mint carried on with its 2023 bullion series featuring Elizabeth II's image on the obverse even after she passed away in September 2022.

As her son, Charles III, takes the obverse spot on Canadian coins in 2024, this will be the first release in the program's history featuring a monarch other than Elizabeth II.

2024 Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coin (BU)

One British coining custom that applies to Canadian coins is the change in orientation from one monarch to the next. The bust of Charles III is featured on the obverse side of the 2024 Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coin. Unlike her late mother's right-profile picture, the new British monarch is depicted here in left-profile relief.

Coin Highlights:
-36th year of issue for the 1 oz Canadian Silver Maple Leaf.
-1st date with King Charles III on the obverse.
-Contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure silver in BU condition.
-Bears a face value of $5 (CAD) backed by the federal government of Canada.
-The obverse depicts King Charles III in left-profile relief.
-On the reverse is the sugar maple leaf.
-Laser-engraved privy on the reverse of the coin.

The original sugar maple leaf was designed by Walter Ott for the Gold Maple Leaf. It is what is shown on the reverse side of the 2024 Silver Maple Leaf Coin. Also, it features a laser-engraved maple leaf privy at the bottom of the field. Radial lines run throughout the backdrop field.

I've always wondered about the maple leaf design. Numista had a short background on him. Walter Ott was an Austrian master engraver, artist, and designer who immigrated to Canada in 1952. He was born in Winkl, Thörlbachtal, on June 20, 1920, and passed away on November 9, 2020, in Collingwood, Ontario. He began working in the Royal Ottawa Mint's engraving department in 1964 and held the positions of Chief Engraver and Art Director from 1977 until his retirement in 1985. He developed and modeled the Canadian bullion maple leaf, of which he was most proud, out of all the more than one thousand coins and medals he produced.

Maple Leaf are outstanding bullion coins for any stacker, next to the American Silver Eagles and Silver Britannia. These are the bullion coins I am more than happy to stack!!!

You know that the core of my Stack is comprised of mainly Maple Leafs but includes other Government backed bullion like Britannias since we are still a part of the Commonwealth, ASEs since most of our trade is with our southern American neighbor and to a much lesser extent Libertads as they are unusually hard to acquire at a reasonable price.

1988 was when the first 1 Troy oz. Silver Maple Leaf $5 coins come to market. The Maple Leaf actually first appeared on the Gold Maple Leaf in 1979 9 years prior to the silver bullion coin. 29,999 proof 1979 - 1989 Proof Maple Leaf Commemorative coins were struck and issued in a Maple wood clam shell case in 1989 priced at $70.

Always with love, 🤗 🌺 ❤️‍🔥

A very good resemblance of King Charles III !👍

I don't know if its just me, or if others feel the same, but Charles picture on coins feels just weird. Like, wrong somehow. Its the queen's picture you expect to see, its been like that "ever since". At least during my life. And she was my boss for 34 years, and her picture was hanging in the office, until I retired. A different person just doesn't seem right.

No, not quite Buckingham Palace, but in the military. :)
And every office had a portrait picture, or the famous ER II crest, or both. Officially she was the CIC of all armed forces of the UK, not the MoD or the Prime Minister. And the royals made frequent visits to regiments. Man, that was always a big fuzz and everybody was on edge then.
Yeah, it feels strange now with Charles. I don't yet have a coin with his image. Don't know if I ever will. The time for buying silver is coming to an end, I guess. And my stock pile is sufficient... :)

It must be a major production when they come visit, !LOL
What an honor!
You've got to have at least one with Charles, for posterity! Who knows if he will be a monarch for a long time.
Yeah, my stack, especially of silver, is getting out of hand. The ratios are nowhere and the opportunity to convert into gold is nil. But I keep buying.
