Are You a Stacker or a Collector

I revisited my YouTube channel and found this old video I made about nine years ago. It brought me back to the early days of my stacking journey, so I thought I’d share those thoughts again here.

For anyone who doesn’t know me, I come from a military family. My mom was an Army nurse, my dad was a colonel in the Air Force, and my two older brothers were naval officers. All of them are gone now and in heaven. Being the youngest — and the only girl — I was skipped over and spoiled. I grew up buying anything I wanted, all through my working life… to a fault. I had no cash savings.

Then I discovered the silver and gold stacking community on YouTube. And that’s when everything changed.

I learned the funny little paradox of stacking: you buy to save. Perfect for someone like me who loves to spend. The more I bought gold and silver, the more I actually saved. What a concept.

People who buy precious metals regularly are often called stackers. They like to stack bullion — coins, bars, rounds — and they usually aim for the lowest premium they can get. The goal is simple: accumulate what you can afford, or what feels right for your financial goals. And yes, I am definitely a stacker.

But I’m also a collector. I love the coins themselves — the designs, the stories, the history behind them. Collectors build sets and choose pieces that mean something to them, not just random coins thrown together.

Somewhere along the way, I realized I’m a mix of both. A stacker and a collector. A lot of bullion coins end up being semi‑numismatic anyway, so the overlap just happened naturally.

I started out buying bullion. Later, as I picked up more pieces, I found myself drawn to the coins and even the hand‑poured silver. That’s when the collecting side of me kicked in.

My goal now is simple: keep stacking and collecting silver, pick up as much fractional gold as I can, and eventually convert the silver into 1 oz gold coins — except for my Constitutional Silver. Then repeat the cycle.

How about you — are you a stacker or a collector?

You know I am both Collector and Stacker.
Which one came first is debatable so playing with my Father's coin collection at an early age doesn't quite count. I figure a Stacker first, since I seriously considered diverting my Retirement contributions and putting it into my Private Precious Metals Pirate Pension plan as far back as in 2013 before taking the plunge in 2014.
I tell you, I was hooked after I bought my first 4 silver Maple Leaf coins, the shine of the newly minted bullion coins, the heavy weight, and the unmistakable resonate ring they make as I stack them on one another.
I drew my inspiration and learned from many veteran Stackers on YouTube and got to know the community there. Then of course that is where I met you Sis.

And I had my own Style...

Always, with Love 🤗🌺❤️

It must be amazing to look back at something you created nine years ago and see how far you’ve come since then. 😊 Those early experiences often become the foundation for the journey ahead. Thanks for sharing a piece of your story! 🙌✨

I'm probably more a collector than a stacker and as long as the prices continue to be in the current range or higher that will likely stay the same.

Ah... and that may evolve in time, !LOL
And yes, it is true. Some collector pieces really do remain the same, whether you’re talking about value, condition, or significance, @bozz!

We sound very similar @silversaver888!😀
Growing up as an only child, I guess I was a bit spoiled as well!!! I also went through life buying everything I wanted with little savings. Thankfully my father was a coin collector, and my neighbors father was a coin collector.....
So I two am the mix of both, starting off stacking Morgan Silver dollars among others.
Today, I am a stacker.... I stack for weight, but I still can't resist stacking a beautiful 100 year-old Gold Sovereign!!😇😀

We really do sound alike. I smiled reading your comment. Being spoiled a little when we’re young… then growing up buying whatever we wanted — that part hit home for me. It’s funny how life eventually nudges us toward better habits, @silvertop.
And yes, stacking for weight makes sense, but I get it — some pieces are just too beautiful to pass up. A 100‑year‑old Gold Sovereign? Wow, I would grab that too. Some coins just speak to you.
I’m glad you shared this. It’s nice to know someone out there stacks and collects in the same mix I do, !LOL😀

I think it's part of the enjoyment @silversaver888 . Monetarily wise, stacking for weight is easy, collecting coins for value requires research and dedication to make sure you're not getting ripped off!!😇

How interesting to read about this duality between stacker and collector. I'd never thought of it that way. I find it curious how the same person can have both impulses: the pragmatic one of accumulating value and the aesthetic one of appreciating the art and history of the pieces.

Although I don't participate in this world, I enjoy learning from those who do. It's wonderful to see the passion with which you speak about your journey and how you've found a system that works for you. Thank you for sharing this perspective; it's always enriching to learn about such dedicated hobbies.💎

Thank you for this. I really appreciate how you put it. There is that mix in a lot of us. The practical side that wants to stack for value, and the part that just loves the beauty and history of the pieces. I never really thought of it as a “duality” either until I started talking about it.
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. It means a lot to me when someone outside the hobby still finds something meaningful in it, @marabuzal

Personally, I feel like a mix of both. Although right now I can't add any new silver to my stack—in fact, I actually have to sell some to pay the bills 🥲

And that is the purpose of stacking! Aren't you glad you have something to sell when times are hard, @ekads?

I always figured my Coins would be worth a lot on Money some day…. Now that they are, I no longer want to sell them… I’ll be content spending my Common U.S. Stable Coinage…
