Keeping What’s Not Perfect Anymore

I’ve been moving slowly through my days since the surgery, trying to adjust to this new pace my body insists on. Healing feels different this time. Everything is quieter, and I’m noticing things I used to rush past. Today, it wasn’t my stitches or the soreness that caught me off guard — it was a plate. One of my mom’s plates.

It’s part of a set she left behind, and I’ve used it every day for years. I’ve always been careful with my things, but this set has a different weight to it. I’ve kept it close since she passed, back when I was twenty‑three and still trying to understand what loss really meant. These plates have moved with me through every place I’ve lived. I treat them gently, not because they’re fancy, but because they’re hers.

This afternoon, I noticed a chip on the edge of one of them. Small, but sharp enough to stop me. I don’t know when it happened. Maybe the cleaners bumped it. Maybe it happened days ago and I only saw it now because I’m finally slowing down enough to see the little things. Either way, it hit me harder than I expected.

It’s strange how something so ordinary can open up a whole feeling. I just stood there holding it, trying to understand why it made me so sad. It wasn’t just the plate. It was everything around it — the years I’ve carried it, the memories tied to it, the way grief shifts but never disappears. Part of me felt like I failed to protect it, even though I know that’s not really fair.

I don’t know what to do with it. Throwing it away feels wrong. Replacing it isn’t possible. Fixing it wouldn’t erase the chip. Maybe the only thing left is to keep it, just as it is. Maybe that’s what this season of my life is teaching me — that things can break and still be loved. That they can still matter, even when they’re not perfect anymore.

Your plate set is nice and is well taken cared of. As for the broken edge of that plate, you can still use it as decor base for a flower pot that has a drainage container to accumulate water ...that way, it will remind you of your mom. I have the same set of those plates, including serving bowls gifted to me by my Viennese mom.in-law. Below is my fave from the set.

Our plates are all chipped up from me misjudging putting them away and accidentally hitting them against other ones. Ours aren't anything special, but it's still a good reminder that would should probably never buy anything really nice.

Looking back is always hard. But life isn’t perfect and neither are we. Look at the chip in the plate as a reminder of the little imperfections we all have. Keep it, cherish as you always have and try to accept it. I think that your mom knows that it wasn’t done in malice, things happen and we build ourselves around them. You have kept them safe for years now, that one little chip is life.

We all get 'chips' now and again. Since there's a sentimental value to it, I'd just keep it and maybe not use it as much as the others to protect it from further damage.

I've not had a surgery lately, but I do have an issue with my hip and leg that has stopped me pretty much from hiking anymore. Going uphill is arduous and painful. Going downhill is a little easier, but has similar pain. All of our hiking trails are intermediate and hilly. I'm pretty much grounded unless we head to a park where the trails are flat. I sure miss the vistas of the hikes I used to take!

You may be a little different now, but you are still YOU! Much loved and much cared for! God loves you; so do I as many others on this platform, no matter what!

I've been there too many times myself.
I still have items that belonged to my late Roommate as constant reminders of her presence, including her favorite pot that always made Mac & Cheese dinners in. I have boxes of my Mom's banking statements I have to keep them for a few more years but then there are volumes of old family photos. My Mom sure like porcelain art, and now I have a storage unit full of it. For now i have this Estee Lauder lipstick on my desk No.87 Sunstone Shimmer, it belong to my Mom.
These things are a part of our grief process. At the same time a reminder of how frail life is and how imperfect we live it. Only one person has lived that perfect life.

Like my Mom, I took on her work-a-holic work ethic.
That work ethic may have achieved my financial goals but I learned perhaps too late that it came at a personal cost. This is why I currently MUST prioritize my time with my kids and family. The need to re-familiarize with my off-line friends. To resume my spiritual journey.
I needed to retire early, to lay off the Hive gas pedal and to put what little time I have left to do the good things I was meant to.

Or is it that we learn "nothing" is ordinary, about our feelings? When my Mom lost her life partner in 2023, and my fiance and I went to try and help her with the Trust that was created. We realized there was simply no way to organize and divide 30 + years... in four day's (her life partner also had two children). Worse yet, was the fact that "everything" left of those 30 + years, should have been burned, burried, and covered in lye... But these were our feelings, and each piece; that old TV table, that broken photo frame, that scrap of paper with scribbles. Those were pieces of my mom's life. Certainly not ordinary things, to her.


I've not been as active on our blockchain either. Hit and miss... some days I'm in all my 200 (almost) Discords. Or trying to respond to the many notifications... whether from a post, or from my community. But as I watch the daily activity of these two words some know so well, trying to take my mom away (Alzheimer's and Dementia). Your post hit right in the feels... Those aren't just beautiful plates, dear soul. Those are your pieces of your mom, and too, each moment they represented. I hope you know how much you are loved, and thought of, and the prayers that come your way...
