Mexican Gold Dos Pesos

If you’ve ever held a Mexican 2 Pesos gold coin, you know the first thought that hits you: this thing is tiny. But that’s part of the charm. It’s the smallest denomination in the gold coin series struck by the Banco de México, yet it carries a surprising amount of history for something barely bigger than a shirt button.

The Mexico City Mint produced the Dos Pesos from 1919 to 1948, a stretch of 29 years that saw Mexico modernize, stabilize, and build out its minting tradition. Each coin is made of 90% pure gold and contains 0.0482 troy ounces of actual gold weight. Not a lot, sure, but it’s real gold, and that alone gives it a certain weight... figuratively, if not literally.

At 12.85 millimeters in diameter, it’s one of those coins you almost want to pinch with two fingers just to appreciate how compact it is. But don’t let the size fool you. Collectors and stackers alike love this piece because it’s accessible, historic, and crafted with the same care as the larger Mexican gold coins that came out of the same era.

What makes the 2 Pesos stand out today is how approachable it is. You don’t need to be deep into the gold‑collecting world to appreciate it. It’s a starter piece for some, a favorite for others, and a conversation piece for pretty much anyone who sees it for the first time. There’s something cool about a coin that small carrying that much story.

In the end, the Dos Pesos is proof that not everything valuable has to be big. Sometimes the smallest things carry the most character.

Aww thank you! You know I love a shiny little gold piece... it’s got that perfect mix of charm and “yep, this belongs in the stack.” It really is a fun one to talk about, and I’m glad it gave you that little spark too. Appreciate the kind words, sis.

Excellent post @silversaver888 !🤗
A small but very easily obtainable for most people! It’s the perfect Coin for people that will tell you that they don’t have extra money to spend on precious metals……
This is where they can start stacking!👍😇😊

Ohhh thank you so much! 🤗 You’re exactly right. It may be small, but that’s precisely what makes it such a perfect entry point for anyone who swears they “can’t afford” to stack. There’s always a way to start, and pieces like this make it easy, fun, and totally doable. Little by little becomes a stack before you know it! Thanks, @silvertop, for sharing your thoughts!

I have this 1945 2.5 Peso as my only Mexican gold coin, very tiny coin that is hard for me to handle. These are frequently found in my local coin shows until the last few years.

Oh yes, it really is... such a beautiful coin and an even more beautiful date 😉 (is someone special born that year?) It’s got that little extra charm that makes it stand out in the stack, @matthew1. Love pieces like this!

A significant date from a collector’s perspective: 1945 marked the end of one of the greatest tragedies in human history, namely the Second World War. During the war, very few gold coins were minted 😌

I love that coin, I have so many of them stored away. I bought a bunch back when they were cheap more than 20 years ago while I was living along the Mexican border. Such a good buy! I wish I could have bought fifty times more now, but I couldn't afford it at the time...

They are tiny, but have serious charm. They really are still pretty inexpensive and a great way to get into gold! I love your Mexican gold collection @silversaver888 !

Going by today's prices at the secondary market, they're pretty up there, too in price! But they are the least expensive of all Mexican gold coins!
