I’m genuinely thrilled to own a 1 oz American Gold Buffalo — something that would’ve been way out of reach if the gold‑to‑silver ratio hadn’t lined up perfectly and let me trade my silver for it!

The American Gold Buffalo is the premier 24-karat (99.99% pure) gold bullion coin produced by the United States Mint. It was first released in 2006 and the coin is celebrated for its high purity, iconic design, which is based on the 1913 Buffalo Nickel, and status as U.S. legal tender.
I now have three of these gold coins: the first-year issue of the 2006 Proof coin, 2014, and 2023!

2014 $50 American Gold Buffalo

The U.S. Mint sells proof versions of the American Gold Buffalo directly to the public through its website. The bullion versions are distributed through a network of authorized purchasers and can be acquired from reputable coin and precious metals dealers.

I’m celebrating real gold — not a metaphor, not a figure of speech, but actual, heavy, shiny coins in my hand.

The $20 Saint‑Gaudens Double Eagle feels almost unreal, like a tiny masterpiece that somehow decided it belongs with me.

The feel of real wealth in our hands.
I lost my chance at acquiring a gold buffalo when it was available locally but I have always seen it priced well above my native gold Maple Leaf, so I'll surmise that the my dealer had to incur significant costs in importing them.

I've wondered why the gold Buffalo was only available in the 1 Troy oz. and not in any fractional form. Would you know Sis?

Yes, sis! Fractional American Gold Buffalo coins (1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz) were produced by the U.S. Mint in 2008. It was available in proof and uncirculated finishes... it is the only time smaller sizes were offered... though there's been talk of their potential return.

It is easy to make it your favorite, @silvertop! It is totally native American, and it is so wonderful that the US mint chose the 1913 Buffalo Nickel to be in gold.

Actually (and seriously), the gold-to-silver ratio is an important tool that we use to plan our silver and gold bullion purchases. Knowing individual spot prices can be useful, but some of us utilize the gold-to-silver ratio to make decisions
