U.S. Constitutional Silver

Some of my favorite coins are U.S. Constitutional silver.

Coins minted before 1965 are usually referred to as Constitutional Silver. Up until that point coins made for US currency still followed the Constitutional mandate and were minted containing 90% silver.

The term Constitutional Silver usually refers to these coins:

  • Mercury dimes
  • Pre-1965 90% silver Roosevelt dimes
  • Standing Liberty quarters
  • Pre-1965 90% silver Washington quarters
  • Walking Liberty half dollars
  • Franklin half dollars
  • 1964 90% silver Kennedy half dollars
  • Morgan dollars
  • Peace dollars

Whenever I can (that is, if I remember to do it), I purchase them, along with my regular silver purchases.

Use the slider above to see the invoices.

1940 Mercury Dime, 1903 Barber Dime, 1964 Roosevelt Dime

Washington Quarters: 1952, 1958, 1959, 1964

1944 Walking Liberty Halves

1962 Benjamin Franklin Half Dollar

1964 J.F. Kennedy Half Dollar

1988 Morgan Dollar

1921 Peace Dollar

Other silver coins

The composition of nickels changed from 1942 to 1945, when silver was added to its metal content; hence, the four-year period has been referred to as the silver nickel era. Specifically, it consisted of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese.

35% Silver Nickels: 1942, 1943, 1944, 1945

Silver was phased out of U.S. currency by 1965. Half dollars would have 40% silver, quarters and dimes would have none. These 40% silver coins were only made for a short time. Since 1971, they've been out of circulation.

1968 J.F. Kennedy Half Dollar

All of the pre-1965 90% silver that has ever been minted is a finite amount. Unlike a generic round... they're pumping out millions and millions of generic silver rounds to meet demand.

With 90% Constitutional Silver,
what you see it what you get!

With Fiat currency losing buying power so much that we may eventually depend on our old silver coinage and crypto alternatives. I don't think SDRs wouldn't help and CBDCs will be shunned as an untrusted currency so long as governments still control it since they done a lousy job of it with fiat.

Hahaha, with CBDCs central banks have complete control. SDRs won't help consumers.
Do you have central bank digital currencies?

Not yet but I know there is a project already under way over a year ago on a Canadian digital currency, we know our Prime minister is much like his father Fidel. 🍁

Yes, constitutional coins are good to have! They are lovely. These... I'll play with, and they give off a mesmerizing, tinkling sound that is high pitched.... the sound of real silver coins!
When you find them take a photo. Then attach it in your reply to my blog, @dayadam!

Friend @silversaver888 I started looking for them and finally got them. They are quite old pure silver, some are very worn, I imagine from use and type. But the two larger ones look great and beautiful to me, plus the 10 that is like an anniversary edition. I don't know what value they will have, but I think they are more valuable to have and keep. 😍

I was looking for them to show you the ones I thought you might like to see. 😃

Some of my favorite coins. Perfect for barter, everyone (can) know their value and purity. Just have to look out for shaved edges (like in the old days).

Once upon a time these wonderful coins were referred to a JUNK! I am satisfied that these coins are now called Constitutional Silver! We are well on our way to the Land of Oz.

We are not in Kansas anymore, however it is still a long journey to the Emerald City. I think we may see a huge divergence in the price of gold and silver on the COMEX and actual physical metal.

We could see COMEX gold at $1300 but American Eagles at $2000. Just as easily we could see silver below $10 on the COMEX but Eagles still at $30+.

I am not sure how this will all play out but something broke on the Foreign Currency Exchange this week in London. The Bank of England had to bail out a number of traders who lost their shirts gambling away the money of Pension Funds.

So @silversaver888 strap on your silver slippers and follow the yellow brick road!

I am 20 years to my retirement... they better not mess with it here!!! I am so scared that they would.
I feel that we are helpless against manipulators. So I just continue with my dollar cost averaging, and hoping for the best, and so far so good. I deal six, but Here is one of my precious metals portfolio for today:

That is awesome! The financial markets are in very crazy times. The only thing that is "real" is that which you hold in your own hands. The next couple of weeks should be very telling. The British Pound looks to be toast, taking many Pension Funds with them.

Margin Calls will require forced sales of all assets until the debts are paid.

https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/uk-pension-funds-ask-corporates-cash-after-gilt-blow-up-sources-2022-09-30/

Think about 2008 and what happened to the markets times 10. I can't tell you what to do but I can tell you that I went to CASH in almost all my trading accounts. I will get back in at some point but just like the mining stocks I do not see anything worth holding on the long side.

As of right now, the best advice I can give is make sure the pantry and the freezer are full so no matter what comes our way you can still grill and smoke meats to your hearts delight.

How is your garden going these days?

I still call it junk-silver, but with the fondness of calling a lifelong friend by their childhood nickname. I was in grade school in the 1960's and remember having to buy things at school like milk. Another student I knew was sent to school with money by his parents to buy the silver coins from the lunch lady. How smart were they?!

It's really a shame that they stopped producing constitutional silver, but I realize that it would be next to impossible to do because of where silver prices are now. Those were the good ol' days for sure! Love ya much sis!😘🤗💖🌸 !LADY

I think everyone should have some constitutional silver in their stack @silversaver888 .....
You are so correct these coins have a finite supply, and during the big Silver melt, so many of these were destroyed!!😳
What a waste ..... These coins not only contain 90% silver, but also U.S. History!!😀

Are there circulated silver that was .999 fine? I haven't seen one. 90% is highest, I thought.
90% fine and with history behind them , @silvertop !

So sad that they pulled silver out of our money, and left us with worthless fiat, they even removed the copper from the penny Lol!🙄

Yes, I'm with you, on the Constitutional Silver Money, SILVER SAVER - @silversaver888. Mercury/Liberty Dimes are my favorite. Eighteen, 35% Silver Five Cents "Nickel", with their 0.5625 Troy ounce, of pure Silver, will get their owner an ounce.

I share your love of constitutional silver! You've even got me collecting 1888 (not 1988 ;) ) Morgans too.

The average price of gas in the US in 1964 was 30 cents. Those 3 dimes today have a melt value of $4.14. That means gasoline today is actually cheaper than in 1964 ($2.75 at Costco in Texas - sorry for you in California BTW https://www.zerohedge.com/political/california-gasoline-now-more-double-price-texas). So people shouldn't complain that prices have gone up. The real complaint should be that the Federal Reserve has devalued their currency. Worse, the Fed won't be happy until they drive the value to zero and usher in a CBDC.
