The obverse design of this coin was inspired by an original design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It features standing Liberty with a lamp and book in her right hand with the sun encircling the flame of the lamp.

The lamp symbolizes learning and discovery, and the sun symbolizes the light of knowledge. The 1996 National Community Service Silver Dollar was issued to honor the spirit of volunteerism in the United States.

The United States Mint at San Francisco does not currently produce circulating coins. It mints clad and silver proof coin sets and Commemorative coins as authorized by Congress. The San Francisco Mint is not open to the public.

The United States Modern Commemorative Coin program began in 1982. Silver coins have been issued corresponding to and equal in specifications of classic circulating silver dollars. I have a long way to go, but here are the ones I shown so far:

National Community Service Commemorative Silver Dollar
Jamestown Commemorative Silver Dollar
The US Botanic Garden Commemorative Silver Dollar
Commemorative Morgan Silver Dollar
Commemorative Peace Silver Dollar
Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar
The Star Spangled Banner Commemorative Silver Dollar

Did they smelt the others?
If they did, I'm glad I got this saved, @cve3

No smelt. The Mint takes orders & payment, then produces them. Thanks for sharing, SILVER SAVER - @silversaver888.

I often believe those that volunteer to do a service are more often taken for granted than they are celebrated! Sometimes, people even criticize those that volunteer! Sad really......

Thanks for sharing an outstanding coin sis!😘🤗💖🌸 !LADY

I think this is one of the least appreciated. I like that there was commemorative coin for the service.
Other countries do all sorts of commemoratives, I like ours.
I wonder if I will be able to collect all. And there are the Half Dollar commemoratives also!
Hugs and kisses, sis 😘🤗💖

Our Communities depend so very much on volunteers @silversaver888 , it's only fitting to mint a coin in honor of those willing to give their time and talents without pay to make things better!😀

Canada has something similar but it is along the lines of Celebrating Volunteerism but not as splendid and inspiring as your National Community Service Dollar.

Always, with love 🤗🌺❤️

I'm glad there is a commemoration of the service, and happy that I got this coin. This nation relies on volunteers so much. They are unsung heroes!
Hugs and kisses, sis 🤗🌺❤️
