Vintage American Argent Mint Shield Silver Round

Silver trade units not only represent silver but also evoke the spirit of global trade and exchange. These rounds were often produced by various mints and private companies made of 1 troy ounce silver round with a fineness of .999 (99.9% pure silver).

The design of the Silver Trade Unit can vary based on the mint or manufacturer. Some common features include:

  1. It often displays symbols related to trade, commerce, or global exchange. Examples include globes, scales, ships, or other trade-related imagery.
  2. May feature inscriptions such as “ONE SILVER WORLD TRADE,” “999 FINE,” and “ONE TROY OUNCE PURE SILVER.”
  3. The hexagonal shape is also a distinctive characteristic of some trade units.

Vintage Silver Trade Units from different years and mints are sought after by collectors. The silver rounds may have unique designs, historical significance, or limited production runs.
Some vintage trade units are no longer in circulation, making them increasingly difficult to obtain.

Today, I will feature another Silver Trade Unit!

Not much is known about American Argent Mint's past. They started about 1982 and, based to IRS filings, went out of business around 1984. Their headquarters were in Provo, Utah.1 American Argent Mint only made one type of 1 Oz bar and one type of 1 Oz round in their brief existence. A silver trade unit on the reverse was the only round that is known to have been made. On the front of that one silver round is a shield, while on the reverse of the silver bar is a stylized flying eagle (photo below from eBay).

American Argent Mint Shield Silver Round BU

Reverse: The central feature on the reverse is the scales, an image found on many trade unit silver rounds. Along the outer circle at the top "AMERICAN ARGENT MINT LTD." is inscribed. The purity and content of ".999 FINE SILVER " can be found on the outer circle below the scales. Right underneath the scales the weight of "ONE TROY OUNCE" is inscribed.

Obverse: The central image is the U.S. Shields. Above the shield in a ribbon the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed. The phrase "WORLD TRADE SILVER" is inscribed above the shield along the outer rim. The content "ONE TROY OUNCE" is inscribed below the shield, also along the outer rim.

Awesome variation of the silver trade unit silver round @silversaver888 !😀
The shield on the Obverse is reminiscent of similar shields on US coinage very nice!!😀👍
I have not run across this variation up here in the Pacific Northwest..........

It's too bad they shut down because they made such nice silver. I think I might have one, not entirely sure. Thanks for the great post!

Scales do forever symbolize trade and commerce, just like sailing ships used to before they put cannons on them, after that they meant something else. Just ask the Japanese what Captain Perry did in 1812.

What did Caption Perry do in 1812? That was the Battle of Lake Erie.
Is that a Northwest Territorial Mint round? Nice!

Oops, wrong Perry. 1812 was still sail.
Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry of the 1854 Perry expedition to Japan 'coining' the phrase gunboat diplomacy.

Ah, Commodore Perry... , he arrived in Japan with a fleet of four ships, which the Japanese referred to as the “Black Ships.” These ships were technologically advanced and played a crucial role in convincing Japan to open its ports. His efforts paved the way for increased trade and cultural exchange between Japan and the West. (ai generated this)

That's a shame it was so short-lived. The eagle with shield design is great!

It's crazy they only lasted two years. There must've been a lot of competition and they couldn't sell enough to pay the bills. ☹️

There must be something we don't know. Nothing is written about them.
Let's start a rumor!🤣
