I have three shrubs of Potentilla in the front yard. And it is the toughest flowering shrub ever! It is starting to bloom again, and soon my front yard will look alive!

Under my only tree, I once planted a Red Ruby Miniature Roses. I’d had it for years. It started out small and sweet, the kind of plant you barely notice until one day it’s covered in blooms and you think, wow, that turned out nice. For a long time, it really was pretty.

That little rose bush grew like it had something to prove. Every time I trimmed it, it came back twice as big, like it was laughing at me. Then it got so wild and unruly that I had no choice but to cut it down—really low, almost to the ground. I figured it would bounce back the way roses usually do.

But... I got tired of waiting.

So I finally told the gardener, “Just uproot it.” And that was that. Suddenly, the space under the tree was empty again, like a blank page. Now I’m standing here wondering what to plant next.

Do I go for something low‑maintenance, something that minds its own business? Maybe a small shrub that stays small. Or maybe I try another flowering plant, something cheerful but not dramatic. Lavender could work. Or hydrangeas, if I want something fuller. Even a simple groundcover might be nice—something soft that spreads without taking over.

I’m not in a rush. I just want something that feels right for that spot. Something that grows, but doesn’t try to run the whole yard.
