Can you make a Living off of blogging on HIVE?

avatar

I was talking with head clerk a while back on whether it is possible to make a living by writing daily on HIVE. His take is, it is possible to a certain extent.

I have written a post every single day for nearly 3 months now. According to hivestats.io, my earnings in terms of USD for the last 30 days shows $179.09.

That is not a small amount by any means in a developing country, especially considering how quickly I can polish up my posts now. There are however a few things I am taking into consideration to look at that exact same number and disagree with head clerk. My stand is no, I can not make a "living" off of writing on HIVE just yet. The just yet part is crucially important here, because believe you me people are making a living off of blogging.

First issue is, half of that goes into HP anyway. There are of course ways around that - making use of services like likwid or being on a constant powerdown mode - neither of which I prefer.

Which brings me to the second issue - account growth. Having to constantly take ALL my earnings out of my account will stagnate it, maybe even decrease in value and stake over time. I have long understood that growth on HIVE is exponential. The more you grow - the faster you grow. Hence my target, as I have repeated like a broken recorder over the past few months is Growth.

I think long term vision is important. If I keep looking only at the present and keep taking everything out, my account will stay where it is 5 years from now. In most cases you need to show you have skin in the game, aka - have a decent stake for you to actually earn enough regularly to make a living off of just blogging.

Hence, yes - it is possible to make a living off of hive, but not just yet for me. I will keep focus on growth for now and aim for the stars and land on the moon maybe!

I think that question also depends a lot of where the individual lives since cost of living is very different around the world. It would be hard to do in North America because cost of living is so high though I have heard that some people are able to do it.

Good luck. 👍

Yes I agree. The costs of living vary widely between developing and developed country. ~$200 is actually a very decent amount in a developing country - maybe not enough on its own, but a very good amount to supplement whatever one is already earning from their day job.

Yep there are some who do it. There was once an user who built a home with her earnings! We were still back on STEEM then.

That must have been when SBD was worth $20 and Steem was $6.
I wish those days would come back lol. Not with Steem though but Hive, of course haha

Hehe some day...some day!

Although with the current mechanics at play to peg HBD, doesn't seem like we'll see HBD soar to those heights again. But HIVE, why not!

Yes. Especially with HBD Savings … 20% APR … you can’t beat that.

That return is extremely lucrative and I have kept that in my plans as well! Would be mad not to haha!

Yeah … I should have bought a ton of HBD when it was at .3934

HBD All Time Low
Apr 06, 2020 (3 years ago) $0.3934

Or Hive when it was at .08694 ….

Hive All Time Low
Apr 06, 2020 (3 years ago) $0.08694

Not being able to buy hive at those prices due to lack of spare funds is something I truly regret. But I don't regret about HBD. There really was no way to anticipate this turn of events with HBD, and I would most likely not have bought in even if I had spare funds. And even if there were discussions about it happening already, I was out of the loop.

Me too… I bought a bunch of HBD with my Hive when Hive was at .50 cents … imagine converting all your Hive to HBD when Hive was at $3 ??? That would have been incredible. I guess The best thing to do is buy a little HBD every day and stake in Savings. With my 20,000 Hive I could have bough 60,000 HBD …

I wish you good luck on this path, there is a great future around here, in a few years you will see how important it is to have continued with this growth.

Absolutely! I still think we are very early here! When the market returns back to good times, we'll hopefully see some really good price action on Hive.

It certainly changes a lot depending on where you live; obviously for many at the moment it is not possible to live only on Hive but, in the future, by upgrading the account and reaching a considerable amount of HP, things change drastically.

I believe that with 200k Hive you can calmly think of making a living from Hive, perhaps by crossing it with some other investment or project...diversifying is always essential!

That's about right, although I'd incline a bit more towards 100k being the benchmark. But of course, the more the merrier :D

Nice earnings.

I agree, I think them sitting in your account growing exponentially is much better for the long term growth.

Good plan, grow now, harvest later. That´s what I am doing since 5+ years.
Plus occasionally buying Hive to speed up growing 😀.

Yeah I actually really regret not doing that. I have been on the chain for over 5 years but I had been extremely inactive for at least half of that time, probably even more. I have finally found myself in a good streak and let's see if I can keep this up and keep growing my stake!

I have been buying too, but I end up keeping them liquid for swing trades 😅
