Pinewood - A fusion of Vintage and Elegance, and a Readers' Paradise?
My bias for Latte is public! I have explicitly confessed my love for Latte over most other forms of coffee on multiple occasions. However, it is little known to most of my readers is, the first time I tried coffee at a coffee shop was a Cappuccino! Why? Because that's the most widely known coffee variant. Not many people with in depth knowledge of coffee may know what a Latte is, or an Americano, Macchiato! But most people will know a "Cappuccino." Given the fact that I started falling in love with this genre of coffee drinks via cappuccino, I never really "disliked" it and every now and then between my latte tasting ventures, I will try out cappuccinos! But I rarely write about it because well...Latte, duh!
But because the number of Cappuccinos I have tried is much lesser than the number of Lattes, it is actually much easier to pick my most favourite.
Because I am not in love with cappuccino, the measure of "the best" for me is the one I am most willing and likely to try again without second thoughts. And that will easily be the cappuccino at "Pinewood."
As for any coffee, the ambiance is the most important thing after the coffee itself for it to rank high on my list. I am very picky when it comes down to this. If there are two very close choices, the ambiance of the coffee shop is what will tip the balance either way. And I believe that is what played in favour of Pinewood's Cappuccino and what makes me wanna go back there and chillax!
Pinewood was spot on with their ambiance and decor. Very vintage, very classy.
I especially loved these wicker lamps used as spotlight which makes for a very pleasant reading atmosphere. Given, the place has no Library - but make no mistake if you carried a book with you for some light reading, Pinewood would serve you really, really well! The waiters were extremely friendly and very well behaved. It’s a calm and quet place, pretty close to my place. So next time I'm feeling fancy while reading a book, I'll think of walking down to pinewood and have a relaxing read! Maybe I'll get on with "1Q84 by Haruki Murakami" that just arrived by the post today! Or maybe I'll continue part of my read of "Before the coffee gets cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi" while I sip a cup of coffee there!
Maybe you're into some outdoor reading by the nature..?!
Or maybe reading with flowers surrounding the railings is your thing...?! Suit yourselves, choose your poison!
We started off with calamari and cappuccino. The calamari was a big letdown, I'll be honest. I am not big i to seafood, but my wife is. So that day was all about "experimenting" for and was precisely the reason why I went with cappuccino instead of a Latte! But the cappuccino was actually surprisingly enjoyable and more than made up for the sloppy calamari.
At first glance it didn’t look that appealing, but the bitterness of it was just what I needed to wipe off the aftertaste from the calamari. Once that was off after the first couple of sips, the cappuccino was actually surprisingly enjoyable and I wondered why I try it so less. Sure latte has a smoother taste because of the increased proportion of steamed milk than that of cappuccino - but less milk brings out the bitterness pretty nicely and I in fact "tasted" the aroma of the coffee better. Again, as I already said it earlier - I have tried very less cappuccinos, so it's quite easy for me to say this is the best cappuccino I have had so far! The ambiance that can easily elevate a book-reading experience is the cherry on top!
Where is this branch btw? Is it new?
I've only been to the branch in Dhanmondi and I absolutely loved the whole décor and how it was all set up over there. Previously there used to be a big two storey CP in that exact spot, Pinewood took over and changed the whole thing from top to bottom.
This is the one in Dhanmondi bhai! Apparently Dhanmondi has the most vintage places in all of dhaka it seems 😂
Whad'ya know, this is actually another branch. The one I was talking about is on Road - 12, right beside the Memorial Museum and Metro Shopping Mall. AND, there's also another branch in Banani.
Thank God Google Maps exists, or I would've thought that they've revamped the whole place, AGAIN. 😂
Ah I see, this one is Road - 9 if I remember correctly. It pretty close to the Dhanmondi Labaid and Green Life Medical College. Or maybe road-9 was The Courtyard..? I just know the places by heart, can't remember the road numbers haha!
Yeah, this one is closer to Courtyard and Labaid, says on Google Maps. I just knew about the one beside Metro Shopping Mall, but I guess Pinewood has 3 branches in total.
Eh..?! How come I missed the one beside Metro Shopping Mall! I have there, but I'll have to keep an eye out the next time I am there.
That's the only branch I've visited so far, even before Pinewood was there me and my friends would hang out at that spot.
I find that flower-lined arch a bit over-powering. I prefer to see flowers growing wild. 😅
I do like the wicker lamps though, and I notice those things whenever I go to a cafe. My husband is not keen on seafood, but he knows that the only fish I like is the one on my plate 🙃😋
The cappuccinos look divine and the highlight for me is the sign made of what I presume is pinewood, which reads "Welcome to Pinewood".
Thanks for joining in and sharing this prompt:)))
Haha yeah, I wasn’t too much of a fan of the flowers too but my wife loved it! I spent a good few minutes snapping some pics for her there hehe!
I too, am not too keen on seafood yet if I am honest! Although I absolutely love Tuna, but that's almost about it - probably because I haven’t tried too many other dishes yet. Oh and I liked Dory fish, nowhere near Tuna though!
The welcome sign was all elegance wasn’t it!
My husband loves sushi and sashimi. I think he just does not like cooked fish or shellfish. For me though, I could eat sashimi all day.
PS. I will check out that Leo Finance thing. It's just that I am on holiday in Egypt and I have limited internet and just doing what I can to stay on top of the communities :)
I don't know what sashimi is, but I tried sushi one time, and one time only! I think you can guess that wasn't a very pleasant first experience 😂
Oh yes, don't worry about that on holiday haha! Enjoy your time first!
Let me know if there's anything I can do to help, I'll be glad to chip in till you're back and settled again!
🤣
Sashimi is raw fish, but no rice rolls. So like raw tuna, salmon, and other cuts like that.
Thanks for the offer to help out, I'll bear that in mind for the future:)))
Okay I don't think I have the guts to try out sashimi anymore 😅
Yes, sure 😃
The fairy lights and wicker lamps are awesome. Sorry about the calamari, though (that’s a let down). All that greenery is totally inviting. Thanks for sharing
I loved the touch of green too! Any place that makes an effort to plant some trees within their vicinity automatically gets on my list of places to try!
Well well well loook at that!! This cafe is like our (me, egg and Sakib's) home at this point! By this I mean the one in Dhanmondi 12. I go there at least 3 times a week just to relax. We also visit the one you've been to, so if you become a regular, we might just run into each other once or twice!
And yess they have good coffee, I love their iced versions more tho.
Summer is coming, thanks for the heads up! 😉
Make sure Sakib is lazing off hehe! We've been "planning" to meet since I moved to Dhaka 😂
I haven't been to the one at Dhanmondi 12, but Riz bhai was also talking about it so maybe I'll drop by there sometime too!
If you decide to visit the Dhanmondi 12 one let us knowww!! My house is like five minute away from it. We can easily swing by and see the infamous Dr. Strange that you are.
Will do! Drag sakib along!
Ohh I will. Just give us a shout beforehand. He'll be there!
hahahahahah oh no!!!!!!!!!! the calamari!!! not the calamari!!! LOLOLOL
i absolutely love calamari and I'll have to visit there and find a good spot with your wife to eat them up! hehehe Two ladies who know what they're looking for in some good seafood hahahahahahaha
ok - so - i do also love capuccino - but i have no idea what the difference is between a macchiato or capuccino or latte!!! LOL
i'm not an afficianado - I only know if its yum or not hahahahahahahaha
I'm glad that yours was delicious and you really captured the magic of that Pinewood cafe - hehehe i would like to join you and your wife sometimes to read and drink and find some better calamari LOLOLOL
Yeah I guess I am done with calamari! 😂 You two are more than welcome to carry on with your seafood venture with my wife, I will order a big fat steak! 😎
Admissions to my school of coffee starts next month 🤣
aficionado! - learned a new word today!
ROFLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
oh and you spelled it correctly unlike me! When I wrote it I thought hmmm that doesn't look right. but then again, this is a comment and casual - so - he will get the point. LOLOLOL
ok- when you get your degree in Coffeeology - please enlighten me LOLOL
and speaking of steak - have you ever had calamari steak? hahahahahaha
ok and one more thing - you know what - i used to think that steak was the epitome of a good cut of meat... but no!
now???
LAMB.
i'm an addict. unashamed. hehehe
What! How dare you? I AM THE PROFESSOR!
You're just taking the piss at me now aren't you 🤣
I actually thought you were going to say Calamari again!
Speaking of Lamb - I actually don't mind lamb. I have had some when I was in china. But we don't get good lamb here. But I can't complain, beef is beef eh!
HAHAHAHAHAHAI'M NOT!!!!!!! LOOK!!! LOL
and excuse me Professor!! please - no disrespect!! dont make me stay after class and write on the chalkboards! LOLOLOLOL
ok lamb - now... i didn't actually love it as a child. it was too um... it didn't taste as domesticated as what I was used to you know?
chicken and pork are just so ... bland? and open to interpretation with spices that we are familiar with? hahaha
but the lamb flavor was stronger to me.
but in the last 5 years? wwwoooooooooooooooo.
i dont know what happened but i'm in LOVE with the flavor. hehehe
I won't lie, that calamari steak actually looks pretty good! But then again, so did the calamari at pinewood!😂
Yes! I know exactly what you mean!
Chicken is easy in that sense that it can take up whatever flavor we want it to and I like that while cooking! Opens up a lot of possibilities for experiment.
I'll just have you clean the steamer on the espresso machine then!
that's such a whimsical cafe! 😃 with that little bridge and arch of flowers, i can definitely vibe a nice cup of coffee (or preferably a floral tea), with a side of fantasy reading 😄 thank you for sharing such a wonderful place!

Oh yes, they got their interior decor absolutely spot on! Especially the mellow lighting of the wicker lamps was such a vintage touch!

That setting is everything. Absolutely beautiful. I like latte as well. Thanks for taking us on a little tour to Pinewood. 😃
