Coincidence? Causality?

Which is what?

These words seem so similar but in reality are not.

Their difference goes beyond the letters that seek to tangle in our mouths when we pronounce them. And so commonly we confuse them believing that both words are synonymous with each other.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

While chance immerses us in a combination of unpredictable and fortuitous events or circumstances that we sometimes do not understand, causality shows us the cause-effect relationship, which depends largely on what every individual performs or exercises.

We experience causality on a daily basis: our actions have consequences, our words have effects, our thoughts produce reactions.

Most of the time these effects or consequences are predictable, expected, although that does not mean that at some point the result will be something different from what we thought might happen.

We are so used to this cause-and-effect relationship that we don't realize that causality is there.

For example, if this had not been this week's word in this challenge, I would not have realized that causality is so present in our daily lives, because we assume that what happens is what is supposed to happen.

And it doesn't.

Our parents taught us that if we obeyed, we would be rewarded. We learned that if we studied we would get good grades. We strive to develop our intellect, to educate ourselves, and to have a trade or profession because we think that this opens the door to a better source of employment or income and therefore to economic stability and quality of life...and we have experienced it.

Cause and effect...always: we do this, we get that.

Is there such a thing as chance? Yes, it does. Does chance exist? Yes. And destiny? I believe so.
But they are not the only reasons why things always happen in our lives.

I make things happen. Preparing a series of events to achieve a certain end or the simple fact of planning, of outlining a life plan, I am already causing causality: I am causing things to happen later, with an already foreseen result, thus diminishing the uncertainty that "chance" can cause.

Perhaps if we analyze what happens to us and the experiences we accumulate, we can notice that casual events are not so much casual, but rather causal because it could be that at some point, we or someone else, did or did not do something that triggered what we live or what happened to us.

I believe that if we do this exercise, we could all be surprised. Perhaps we lack the awareness to consider that the acts we perform or fail to perform, have consequences, have effects.

Proverbs and sayings always have in their analysis something of popular wisdom and there are some that reflect very well what causality is.

For example:

  • He who sows wind, reaps storms.

What do you think? Is this causality or chance? Can you perceive a fortuitous event or, on the contrary, does it indicate that the sowing action you do today (cause), is what you will reap in the future (effect)?

Chance can produce in us an ephemeral infatuation or disappointment for the things that happen, but it is causality that provides us with emotional stability, security, performance to achieve an end. By causality, by effort and often without realizing it, we make things happen in our lives.

By causality we are masters of our thoughts, our life, our present, and our future...let's learn to think, let's learn to act and to have consequences. Let's make things happen and in the meantime, let's enjoy how wonderful life is, and perhaps, the coincidences that reach us.

Casualidad? Causalidad?

Cotidianamente experimentamos causalidad: nuestras acciones tienen consecuencias, nuestras palabras tienen efectos, nuestros pensamientos producen reacciones.

Wow this was very well written and formatted as well! Thank you for giving examples to explain the difference between causality and coincidence. I kept reading causality as casualty at first 🤣.

I do like to believe that we can control few things to an extent. It holds us accountable when it comes to doing things. For ex: if I study well, I will do better in the exam.
