The Annual Tree Lighting Is Back in LA Union Station

Hello Hivers!

The Christmas season is here!! Today we would like to share with you what we have been busy with in Southern California (SoCAL) in anticipation for the Big Day. One of the traditions here in SoCAL, as well as other parts of the US, and perhaps around the world, is the lighting of gigantic Christmas trees in public places. It is usually done in front of a City landmark and is open to the general public.

It has been an annual celebration, except for last year, during the intensity of the covid-19 pandemic when some places did it virtually for safety reasons. This year, some venues opened up and are continuing the tradition. The Los Angeles Union Station, for instance, a famous landmark located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, celebrated the event with much funfare -and we seniors were there !!.😊

The Station is about a 40 minute drive, so we left home before 5PM, hoping to get there by 6 PM. We wanted to take a picture of the majestic 30ft-Christmas tree before the lighting; but the place was really darkened, we could not even see its silhouette. The venue was crowded with excited people - kids, moms, dads, seniors. The festivities started at 6:30 PM with beautiful carols reminiscent of Christmas past, singing and dancing, holiday crafts, snow showers and-- free hot chocolate and cookies!! Santa Claus came with two elves, flanked by tall, willowy snowflakes. At 7PM, the countdown began and the crowd counted along, then voila!! Thousands of tree lights went up and the giant 30ft tree went ablaze! It was magical! It made us feel alive and young again! We plan on going again next year!!

Fascinating Lights! Here in Spain, the streets are also with Christmas lights. A lavish light decors are not so common in the towns. In big cities yes.... In Vienna, we have all kinds of lights in every streets in the city.
