Greetings to my favorite science community online, StemSocial.

It's @skyehi and I'm super excited to be back to continue my series on Android App Development Tutorials for beginners.

Today's episode is a really special one. We won't exactly be building an Android App but I'll be providing a tutorial guide that would help beginners go through with future App Developments.

If you noticed in most of my episodes or blogs on this series, I always start out with the "Prerequisites" which include downloading and installing both the Android Studio IDE and the Java Development Kit.

I wanted to continue with building more Apps and even a Christmas App like I promised but I figured why not make a special episode to actually show the step by step procedure to installing the Java Development Kit, JDK just incase some newcomers to Android programming have troubles with it.

So guys today we're going to be doing just that. I'll actually be using a Windows 11 PC to do the installation guide but it's pretty similar on almost all versions from Windows 7 upwards but I would highly recommend that you use Windows 10 or 11 for programming or Android App development.

Java is a really versatile programming language which is what we use for developing a wide range of applications, from web-based apps to mobile and even enterprise systems.

So guys if you're ever looking to get started with Java development on your Windows 11 PC or maybe even the Windows 10 or lesser versions, you'll definitely need to install the Java Development Kit (JDK).

This tutorial blog has been put together to walk you through the process, and I'll provide step-by-step instructions and to ensure a successful installation.

Without wasting anymore time guys, Let's get to work 👨‍💻

Downloading the JDK Software

Alright guys the first and obvious thing we need to do is to heard over to the JDK official website and download the JDK Software or setup on our computer.

So guys simply open your preferred web browser, I'll be using Chrome Browser for this, and go to the official Oracle website.

I'll share the link to the website below so just click on it and you'll be sent straight to the official download page.

Oracle JDK Downloads.

Now simply scroll down the website to find the JDK download section. In the future if you're still going to use this blog as a tutorial, maybe they would have changed the User Interface but just find the "Download" page.

The next thing you need to do is to click on the version of JDK you want to install on you PC. I'll always recommend installing the latest version but they also give versions depending on your PC operating system so just choose the right one for your PC.

However it's always recommended to choose the latest version to get the most up-to-date features and security fixes.

After you're done selecting the version of JDk to download you'll be shown a license agreement page.

Just Accept the license agreement and select the download link corresponding to your Windows operating system.

What I mean is that some people's PC have 64-bit and some have 32-bit so choose the one based on your PC.

If you're having troubles finding out about whether your PC is 64 or 32 bit please let me know in the comments - I've actually worked with both versions before so I'm pretty good and working that out.

So the download will start and once the download is complete, locate the installer file in your Downloads folder. It's always going to end up in the Downloads page so you can search for that.

Running the Installer

Alright guys the easy part is done, time for the more technical part which is about running the installer on your PC. Don't worry it's not rocket science.

The first thing you want to do after locating the JDK installer file is to double-click it.

The downloaded installer file should look something like jdk-17.0.1_windows-x64_bin.exe . Of course the number 17.0.1 could be different because that's just a version number, new versions will have different numbers.

So double click on it to launch the installation wizard.

The installation wizard will guide you through the process in very easy and simple steps. Just click "Next" to proceed from the first page.

You'll be given the option to choose the destination folder where you want to install the JDK file. So if you're looking for the JDK on your PC, that's the destination you'll have to go.

This destination is very important and you must keep it in mind because sometimes while installing Android Studio, you may need to link JDK with your Android Studio IDE and that's when the destination folder will come in handy.

However it gives you a default location and the default location is usually fine for most users. So guys click "Next" to continue with the installation process.

Now the installer will show a summary of your selections. What you have to do is to simply review that information and when you're satisfied with it, click "Install" to begin the installation process.

Now guys usually the installation process may take a few minutes but that would also depend on the RAM and power of your PC. Once the installation is complete, you'll see a confirmation message. Just click the "Close" button to exit the installer.

Configuring Environment Variables

At this point the JDK has been successfully installed on your PC however we still have a few things to do to configure your computer to be able to execute Java codes.

Now since JDK will help us run Java based programs on our computer from the Command line or (Command Prompt Software) we need to set up the Java environment variables.

To configure the Java Environment Variables, first right-click on the Start button and select "System"

Now guys click on "Advanced system settings" in the left sidebar of your start menu.

Inside the System Properties window, click the "Environment Variables" button which sends you to another page.

Now under "System variables," find the "Path" variable and click "Edit."

The next thing is to click the "New" button which opens an editText screen for you to add the destination path of your downloaded and installed JDK setup to the bin directory inside your JDK installation folder.

For example the path would look something like this: C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-17.0.1\bin.

When you're done adding your path, just click on "OK" to save the changes and there you have it guys, the Java Environment Variables has been set and your computer or PC is ready to execute Java codes or commands.

However, there's no proof without testing so we need to test whether we have successfully or correctly installed Java JDK on our PC.

Verifying the Installation

So guys to ensure that Java is installed correctly on the PC, you would need to run some Java instructions and see if the PC will be able to understand and execute.

We would need to open a Command Prompt and type the following command:

java -version

After you type the above command java -version and press enter key, you should see information about the installed Java version. We can also check the Java Compiler version using the following command;

javac -version

Congratulations guys! you have successfully been able to download and install the Java JDK on your Windows PC. You are now ready to write, compile, and execute Java code.

Android Studio IDE should work perfectly well when installed. Now don't say I wouldn't help you 😂😂 Merry Christmas guys.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read today's post. I hope you enjoyed this episode of my series.

Have a lovely day and catch you next time on StemSocial. Goodbye 👨‍💻
