Alternative Weekend: Digging Deeper into the Repository

I have spent an unproductive morning trawling through FOUR years' worth of my STEEM and HIVE content, adding the titles, URL's and songs to a spreadsheet.

After reaching December 2019, I figured I had enough of this. Why bother with all this tedium?

Well because I don’t particularly want to duplicate tunes and my ideology of them, while unintentionally worded differently will be the same as the first time around.

In a nutshell, I can't remember what songs I wrote about FOUR years ago and don't want to bore you all to death a second time around with the same shit.

While looking at an old post I had to chuckle at the comment from @nathen007.

No taste in music, I am mortally offended! Here are some more shit songs for you mate. After all that fucking around this morning, I am quite sure these are fresh.

Anathema – Pitiless (Judgment – 1999)

smal_16642illustrationofanelectricguitarpv.jpg

It’s almost 21st Century music, so give me some credit. I did try hard.

Finding anything new and good I have serious issues with and many young people are spurning the shit that is thrown out these days... that's another reason for it.

image.png
Source
...'gone for all time? I hope not, though I fear their best work is now well behind them'...

Anathema sadly folded and disbanded during the COVID pandemic and are gone (until they reform again). I have seen them selling their equipment via Facebook such as the keyboard a certain song was written on; it's all very sad.

Pitiless is another of those hair-raising screechy guitar sounds from the Judgement album, a time when they were into their Doom Metal era and before Lee Douglas joined which would radically change their sound. (She's the pretty one at the front).

It's short, to the point, and appears truncated when listening to the clip. In fact, the track merges into another song so the effect is quite intentional. Dark and brooding, it hits hard when you need a short fix of noise.

Slowdive - Alison (Souvlaki – 1993)

smal_16642illustrationofanelectricguitarpv.jpg

After discovering Lush, around 2 years ago (you don’t need to tell me I’m slow, I already know that), I figured there must be some other great shoegaze music from this era.

I searched hard and found very little. There were many acclaimed bands from that time. 'Souvlaki' was heavily criticised at the time, heckled as crap only to be hailed as revolutionary later.

Haven't we heard this before?

...'from the days when the bloke's had overturned bowl haircuts, it was cheap and at a push your mum could do it for free'...

Slowdive’s ‘Souvlaki' was their supposedly critically acclaimed albums. I have tried to like it, listened many times, and love the ambiance of it all, but it's not Lush!

I have concluded I won't find another Lush, and after 2 years I have yet to make another significant musical discovery.

Alison does hold me to some degree. It’s melodic, dreamy, ambient and the history and chemistry between vocalists Rachel Gosling and Neil Halstead intrigued me enough to dig.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Sir Psycho Sexy (Blood Sugar Sex Magik – 1991)

smal_16642illustrationofanelectricguitarpv.jpg

I am not a fan of rap music, and that’s what this song essentially is. I bought ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik’ on the strength of ‘Under the Bridge’ and ‘Breaking the Girl’, which are both non-rap songs.

On receiving ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik' I was mostly disappointed except for 'Sir Psycho Sexy’.

image.png
Source
...'occasionally they perform clothed, seeing Flea naked does little for me'...

What an extreme song! Full of bad language, over 8 minutes long, and after 4 minutes or so it completely metamorphoses into something else.

If anything, I would describe the second half of ‘Sir Psycho Sexy’ as progressive and worth a listen if you are at all turned on by that genre.

If you can tolerate the horrors of the first half with lyrics such as 'There's a devil in my dick and some demons in my semen', or 'on her crotch so very warm' or 'I said, "What's up?" now suck my dick' then you have something rather unique.

I am digging deep, but have a few more in the bag. Always opinionated but feel free to say what you like.

You could write a script to compile that list based on tags and searching for the markup you use for the song titles. I have something like that I used on my Follow Friday posts. I'll check out these choices later.

I'm more than halfway through, and noticed a few duplicates. I can't remember what I posted 4 years ago. I know you have slipped in 'Starless' more than once. We ain't perfect!

Hehehe, that's very understandable, considering the fact that you were still learning a lot at that time.

Wow, that sounds really interesting, I had some songs I do share every Tuesday and I try to use a unique tag to help me find it easily too.

Tags can come in useful for things like this. I adapted my script for Mr Chops and it worked well. It finds loads of posts in about one second!

Yes, it works very well and it cones in handy all the time. I'm very sure Mr Chops won't have a hard time finding a post if he adopts it.

Hi @steevc I need something similar for my #newtunes posts from last four years. Could you help me?

I'll have a look later. Will see what I can do.

Maybe give me a buzz on Discord so I can send you the results there.

Update: I had some success. Will wait to hear from you.

That's great. Just came to the hotel now and respond to replies. Do you have the same nickname as in Discord?
I'm thinking to separate these posts by years. So, I'd like to create a playlist for each year :)

Music is something that is always going to be whether nice or not and that only depends on those who listen to it but there are some songs that you just like even when you don't like the genre. I'm not a really big fan of rap songs but I have listened to some that I enjoyed and I even added it to my Playlist.

These artists are not known to me at all but I'm happy I get to know them but I love that of Allison more, I will go find out more about them.

I'm not a really big fan of rap songs

Me neither, and there seems to be more of it than ever now. I have stopped listening to the radio.

Hahaha, seems like we have a few things in common then because I also stop listening to the radio, except when I'm boarding a vehicle, lolz.

I would approach it this way...

  • 4 years ago many ppl who follow you now may not have followed you so why bother?
  • Even if they followed you back then, a percentage may not have seen those posts or may not remember.
  • If they do, they can always skip today's post or leave you a comment such (you're getting old and repeating things buddy :)

Thanks for the tunes! I was on group one

I would feel bad knowing I have highlighted a certain song before. On the few occasions I did it, it was unknowing. @steevc helped me out some with a script he wrote. That will fix it!

I think the peppers just came out with a new album. Crazy that they are still making music. I really like the first wave channel on Sirius XM. I don't listen to it too much with @mrsbozz though because she will eventually look at me and say "what are we listening to?".

Yes, they are a long-lasting band. If I could listen to this radio station of yours, I would. It doesn't reach over here :)

You can't get satellite radio over in the UK? Here is the link to the station, but you probably can't listen unless you are a subscriber. Gives you an idea of the stuff they play though:

They want me to subscribe to listen, I'm not up for that.

I'm not so sure about the 'shoegaze' stuff, but each to their own. I also bought Blood Sugar Sex Magik and it has some good tracks. The Peppers have had some wild times and some of them suffered for it. Chad Smith pops up in a lot of things like drumming documentaries and seems like a fun guy.

I'll look at doing another post like this some time soon. I need to run my script to see what I have already posted.

It was the 90's when I bought that. I haven't bought a CD in.. over a decade now. A docco of the band might be a good watch. I don't know a lot about them.

I've bought at least one CD this year. I buy some that mean something to me.

Just found these. Probably others.

You know i feel you have done a great job, It is never an easy job digging or doing a research for anything.

Anathema sadly folded and disbanded during the COVID pandemic and are gone (until they reform again). I have seen them selling their equipment via Facebook such as the keyboard a certain song was written on; it's all very sad.

The pandemic really destroyed a lot of things, Dreams and purpose and it also made new billionaires and millionaires. It is very sad Anathema had to fold very sad 😭 but all good you have done well on thes selections.

Do you have a history of posting music stuff? It wouldn't be tough to modify @steevc's script. Even I could do that!

Darn it to heck... but at least we have this...

And who could blame a person for not wanting to repeat the past.

Bit boring for them, yes.

Thanks for this one though 👍
