Fails of the Urban Explorer: The Cat House

avatar
(Edited)

My stories are generally told in order, and the next one should be from early June, but I am going to slip in an extra visit from yesterday due to it being a little different.

- WARNING - DISTURBING PICTURES OF CATS -

I picked up on this location by doing some google scouring. That is using the overhead map view looking for potential derelict locations.

19_IMG_4218_19.jpg

Its time consuming and often unrewarding, and in this case, I was searching for something that didn't exist, due to intentional misinformation from someone who had sold out to the newspapers.

The location was in fact, ‘The Axe House’, somewhere I have already visited but didn’t initially pick up on. ‘The Axe House’ is a fantastic time capsule, and I will host it in the future.

The sell-outs, to their credit, informed the newspaper that it was located 100 miles to the north. Better than telling them the precise street, but I wouldn’t have told them anything other than fuck off.

1_IMG_4199_1.jpg

I digress, as while looking for the non-existent Axe House in completely the wrong location, I spotted something else.

It looked like some kind of isolated house or farm and so we marked it down for a visit.

The gate leading to the house was padlocked, and yet the grass did not seem overly long. You have to look at the factors before potentially trespassing on someone's property.

3_IMG_4201_3.jpg

I do abandoned places, not occupied ones. People don't take kindly to unwanted Urban Explorers if they still are living there.

4_IMG_4202_4.jpg

The gate could be easily be slipped past by pedestrians, and immediately we saw a small kitten sitting on the path.

18_IMG_4216_18.jpg

...'yes that's my foot, I hate photographing my own feet but shit happens sometimes'...

I didn't seem afraid at all and stared nuzzling up to us. Trying to ignore the little animal we continued toward the house to be confronted with two more cats.

One was large, the other, another kitten. None of them made a sound but like the first kitten appeared to want our attention and kept following us around

8_IMG_4206_8.jpg

I was starting to think SleepWalkers at this point. Then I noticed the eyes. Two of the three had one missing. One the left eye, and one the right.

…’what the fuck was this place, some kind of torture home for cats?’…

Did anyone live here? It was deathly quiet, and we crept around with our feline companions who seemingly did not want to give us away

Whoever lived, or did live here was a serious hoarder, that was plainly obvious.

20_IMG_4220_20.jpg

...'the look from the big cat was pleading, 'Help us', but what could we do?'...

Was it one or two houses? The one on the far end was seriously overgrown. Nobody had stepped through the front door in years.

2_IMG_4200_2.jpg

Yet we were both very apprehensive about looking around the back and opening the gate.

5_IMG_4203_5.jpg

This dude has some kind of obsession with Land Rovers. We counted several, all filled with junk, and left to rot away.

12_IMG_4210_12.jpg

We saw at least THREE caravans all decaying and locked up.

11_IMG_4209_11.jpg

A couple of lawnmowers, but we didn’t this person use them for his grass?

7_IMG_4205_7.jpg

9_IMG_4207_9.jpg

It was all getting a little strange and I had an uneasy feeling. The fact the cats were hanging around the front door told me this was their source of food.

10_IMG_4208_10.jpg

21_IMG_4221_21.jpg

There must be someone in there, or they wouldn’t congregate. Then we heard a Rooster.

14_IMG_4212_14.jpg

As well as all the crap that I am showing you, there was a row of rotting sheds, seemingly with chickens and roosters within.

16_IMG_4214_16.jpg

17_IMG_4215_17.jpg

That was our key to leave. I think this crazy house must be occupied by some wild-eyed cat-loving, hoarder hermit who prefers felines with just one eye.

15_IMG_4213_15.jpg

13_IMG_4211_13.jpg

6_IMG_4204_6.jpg

If there are locked up chickens, then he may just be opening the door to get his eggs. Better we are gone when that happens, else we might be on the wrong end of a hot poker.

Shit that place must be occupied, I think you're right.

That lawnmower looked like it was in good condition.

The prospect of what's inside is a little terrifying. I'd be tempted to mount a little camera so you can see the door and see if it ever opens...

This is what happens when you try to find something unspoilt by the vandals, graffiti mobsters etc.., some crazy bastard still lives there. The roosters were silent and then started making a load of noise. Time for us to leave!

Oh yeah and the roosters... another dead giveaway.

Hoarder I guess.

Still, made for a great read!

Still, made for a great read!

Thanks, I try and make them entertaining. Hoarder for sure, the number of vehicles was just about double figures, all of them useless and wrecked.

As you say, what could you expect the inhabitant to be like, handy with a shotgun maybe?

I do tend to associate Land Rover drivers with aggression, so quite possibly.

How very creepy! It’s a good thing you made it out safely. I have a feeling your visit didn’t go unnoticed. Those poor kitties. I wouldn’t want to know the story behind the eyes, quite honestly, and yet if the owner is doing bad things to those innocent creatures, he should get his arse kicked by the authorities.

You're telling me it was creepy, the tension was real, should we open the back gate or not? That could have been the trigger for madman inside to confront us with pointy farm instruments or worse.

I have a feeling your visit didn’t go unnoticed.

I do wonder if we were being watched through those spider-infested netted curtains.

The cats, who knows.. the image of the big orange one looking at me is terrible, you can see the pain.

I can't believe you explored as much as you did! Open the back gate? Definitely not.

Have you thought of reporting this to the authorities? Or do you not want to have to explain what you were doing there in the first place?

This has the makings of a horror movie.

...the stories of the one-eyed mad cat lady were true!

Still, interesting for Land Rover fans.

Hope the cats and chickens are being cared for.

I thought they may have been feral initially but feral ones don't flock around humans. It all added to my thoughts that some crazy was living there. One bad step and we too could have been one-eyed in a short space of time!

We had a one-eyed dog. She got along fine after adapting. Used to bump into things to start with.

I'm a one eyed person. I used to bump into things, too. :)

I once knocked myself cold hurrying around a corner of a piece of machinery and not seeing the head high piece on my right.

Ouch! I just have eyes that don't see much without thick glasses.

Wow. That is just frighting to me.

That's why you are a much better Urbex than me. When I saw the second cat with one eye I would have done the boogaloo. And don't mean sort of.

I'd seriously consider 'telling my story' to the appropriate authority. People that disfigure animals often graduate to something more.

Ohhhhhhh.

Two cats with the same disfigurement.. is it too much of a coincidence? I do wonder what the chicken coop looked like.

Getting to it was like striding through a jungle, so much junk, and brambles in the way. How does the crazy dude get his eggs without getting scratched to death?

Uggggghhhh. That is just creepy.

How do the chickens get fed if he can't even get there to get his eggs? I think you should be really glad you DIDN'T make it to the coop...

I agree... the probability of that is so low. This post has had me scouring the pics with a magnifying glass lol...

And lets not talk about the pram....

I shudder to think about the psychology of this person..

That's quite creepy. I reckon the guy is a lawn mowing bicycle riding Land Rover one-eyed cat having old guy. 2 out of 3 cats with one eye? Time to go... The only things in order are the lawn mowers and bicycle. Yet the entire area is overgrown and the bicycle has knobbies on the front and slicks on the back... Maybe he just doesn't like things that match... On the other hand could be a young guy looking after his gramps and all his stuff. You've a bountiful of derelict buildings around there it seems. Here its more about financial crashes rather than old buildings...

I think the pedal is missing from that bike, how would he ride it? There are some real cranks over here, I think we narrowly avoided meeting one.

OMG!!!! What a creepy bloody place!!! And those poor cats!!! There MUST have been someone there... like you said... the cats would not congregate somewhere like that if they were not getting fed - and as for the locked up roosters. As much as I am curious to have had a visual for this weirdo.... on the other side of the coin I am not so sure haha!

And whats with all the cars!!! That is a lot of wealth rotting away right there...

Love that old fireplace... wouldn't mind nabbing that haha!!!

I really got the creeps reading this one... something definitely unsavoury there....

OH gosh... just thinking about it gives me the heebies... was chatting to @bigtom13 about it in our PHC server lol. I was also looking at the photos again later....

Perhaps my eyes are playing tricks on me, but almost dead centre on the pic looks like some kind of animal hide hanging??

Ohhhhhhh, crap. I think you are right.

Maybe there is more than one way to skin a cat...

It does.., I never noticed, skinned cats too. I'm not going back to double-check!

Unimaginable that someone would live in the midst of all of that, but I have seen the hoarder shows a long time back, so I do realize occasionally it happens.

The one eyed cat photos was a little alarming. One? sometimes cat fights cause that, but two in the same place? ... a little suspicious !

I looked up one-eyed cats out of interest. They do fight, but two of them? I don't know....

Oh my word @slobberchops, this place looks like it's straight from a Stephen King movie/book! Those poor cats, what the heck happened there?! I would have jolted from there so fast, looks like the place belongs to a very disturbed person!
A real mystery story here!

you have some amazing content nearby! I hope to find more interesting buildings here. our area is speckled with ski resorts due to the mountains and therefore people try to be pretty proactive of not having "eyesores" around. keep in mind that is absolutely in no way whatsoever my vocabulary; but sadly the reality of this area. people really get upset about things hanging around. a couple weeks ago someone in my apartment building tried to have my car towed from our parking lot because i had a flat tire.

this one seems amazing. its a shame it seemed to be occupied- seems like the kinda place you could come across some really interesting shit. hopefully youll be able to make another trip there one day when it isnt occupied! id love to see the interior

Poor cats ... although they don't look hungry. It seems to me that they were one-eyed due to territorial fights between them

There are so many treasures in that place @slobberchops
That Cats probably got injured fighting each other, I bet they thrive in eating mice and birds and whatever creatures they find in that interesting abandoned structure.

Poor cats, they have been so badly treated. Most stray cats over here look a lot healthier than those dudes.

What kind of animals live on that property?
