Fails of the Urban Explorer: The Old Houses
Old and decrepit houses are part and parcel of Urban Exploring. Here are a few we visited and failed to get inside.
No doubt in the future they may become accessible again and can be revisited.
The Old House
I picked this one up from another Urban Explorer who took a photograph from the topmost window which looked over a main road.
The road I recognised only too well as I used to work close by. By using my powers of deduction, angles, trigonometry, Pythagoras' theories, and advanced algebra all brought together, it took me to the steps of 'The Old House'
'The Old House' didn't want me to photograph it and despite several attempts they all turned out a bit shit and messy like these.
I was going to ditch them; maybe the sun was shining too brightly that day or maybe an evil presence was telling me to fuck off. I'm going for the evil spirit conspiracy.
How that other dude got in beats me as it was well sealed. Maybe he got a guided tour courtesy of this estate agent.
£50,000 for a detached property is some kind of bargain. Are you interested @goblinknackers?
The back street led to someone else's back door and was not a way in. It was a bad start to the day.
The Ivy House
DizzyDiscovery noticed this one, honked me and we both stopped to have look. Covid-19 has forced us to travel separately which sucks but is necessary if we want to avoid fines.
Was there anyone living there? You have to make sure properties are truly abandoned before looking around.
DizzyDiscovery pointed out the ivy had recently been pulled off from the front of the house. It did look that way.
A woman walked past us giving us funny lingering stares. I didn't feel she lived there but did feel it was time to abandon this one and move on. We don't want plod arriving.
The Roadside Farm
It took a little work to find this and thanks to a GoonTuber who gave away a little too much information, I did after some perseverance.
He got inside but did he do it without breaking in? This particularly Gooner is more akin to Spiderman, so I have to give him the benefit of the doubt.
It doesn’t look like a farm but could be called a small one with barns around one side and the rear.
Getting close was problematic as pedestrians were walking up and down in the afternoon sun, all seemingly taking lots of notice of the dude with a massive light and the other one with a ton of photography clobber.
We had to scramble around the back, over a wall and several metal fences shooing sheep away at the same time to get close enough to check for access points.
Not a chance, and well sealed. Love the improvised door seal!
Brook House
Brook House was a huge disappointment as I had it marked down as a given. The front door was supposed to be ajar, and yes it is but attached is a brand new padlock.
The side of the house was no better; wooden seals had been added, though some were older and graffiti-scarred.
Getting around the back? There was too much shit to clamber over. What the fuck was in these bin bags, body parts?
The fence was the spiky topped type, great for piercing my bollocks and little else. Brook House is one for another day.

Did you know every user has their own profile map?
And so does every post as well!
Want to have your post on the map too?
I must say, I am loving the photos in this one particularly. Must have been the right comvo of subject and light especially in the first half.
The old house wins hands down as my favourite, shame it was a fail
You know I wasn't going to post 'The Old House'. I couldn't get a clear shot of it, the others were worse than these. Damn spooks!
Well, I am glad you did. Spooks be damned!!
"couldn't they have left this off until after we had been in?" - imagine if the brand new padlock appeared while you were inside, exploring 😃
You have a point, we could have been trapped forever. I almost got myself trapped yesterday in a pub. The door closed and the handle had been ripped off. I just managed to get some leverage on it and persuade it to open.
That's what I tell my girlfriend as well "I got trapped in the pub, the door closed and there was no handle. The manager let us out in the morning"
LOL, this pub had no beer, not even empty casks!
A damn shame, I say. Some law must be passed about abandoned pubs having to leave quality brew behind!
Dont give up on them!
If at first you don’t succeed......buy a crowbar 😂 😂 😂
I was thinking...
Ooooer! IVe never been that extreme
Well, if everyone was successful at everything right away we'd have a working vaccine and you'd be back at work and wouldn't be looking at old houses, anyway.
Some likely looking places, actually. I'd have liked to see inside too.
We got in several yesterday @bigtom13 including a Lunatic Asylum, shame it was totally wrecked inside.
Confounded! Someone doesn't want you to get into these places. You could get a job photographing them for prospective buyers.
I'm sure the owners don't want any of us inside, plenty more to come.., we did another marathon yesterday. I have never had so much content.
freaky .... the house reminds me of the adams family house (in modern days term)
Yeah, I see the resemblance!
Some folks see sun rays and orbs and claim all kinds of stuff. Personally, I kind of like the look!
It is just sad to see old houses which are abandoned as if you abandoned a family member. Here in my place houses are always having people who will occupy and or renovate or put a new one and never will get abandoned, having people occupy it of the next generation. @slobberchops
WOW. in fact, old and worn out houses can look very scary in proportion to the weather conditions. or digital editing is effective in this. I like these shots. I don't want to be there in the evening and rainy weather :). The textures of the photos are beautiful. beautiful hdr edits again..
In general, when I see such pictures, I think of how people live in these places where I have looked at their pictures from the old times. For example, a lady watering her flowers in front of the window covered with ivy in the last photo calls out to be careful and slow for her kid running after chickens outside the house... Very beautiful pictures... There are a few old mansions where I live, but I never had a chance to enter...
spooky stuff. IT makes me wonder what were the circumstances that resulted in them being abandoned in the first place.
With houses it's hard to get info unless its a mansion and the occupant has been jailed for some crimes, that does happen.
oooh, i just remembered a mansion in the Bahamas that was owned by a drug lord. This was over 25 years ago when i saw it but at the time it was abandoned as well. That would have been wild to have entered, but probably also a great place to get shot.
I have missed so many as I wasn't interested at the time. I see them every day now (not drug lord pre-owned mansions), just driving in the streets.
If it makes you feel any better, those look so small that there probably wasn't much to see inside of them anyway. At least that is what you can tell yourself!
The Old House has some decent old stuff inside or did. I read the other report from several years before.
