Maxwell's Cafe & Wine Bar - 'NOT a Tasteem Review'

I have a few restaurants to review before my stash is exhausted and will post them as regular posts as @tasteem has no plans to move to Hive.

I was hoping @vandining may move its reviews beyond Vancouver but it doesn’t like that way.

Hive does not have any incentives to post restaurant reviews or food articles, beyond the Foodies Unite Community, so that’s where I will place this and any others for now.

It was in early February when I visited Maxwell's Restaurant in Clitheroe, Lancashire for a spot of breakfast.

Maxwell's is out of the town centre so I wouldn't expect it to be as busy as some of the other more central restaurants in this market town.

IMG_1211.JPG

These were the days when people could go out and not contact some life-threatening virus that may or may not kill you.

I figured a Tuesday morning may yield any empty restaurant but was surprised by the amount of diners present.

IMG_1218.JPG

Most were pensioners and I may have brought down the average age by several years just by being there, not that I’m young anymore.

IMG_1212.JPG

We had been to Maxwell’s once before for a Christmas bash and I found it adequate at best, and probably not the greatest time to review the food.

IMG_1213.JPG

This time it was going to be breakfast and so I ordered the big one, ‘Full Maxwell’s’ and hoped it wouldn’t be too much for me.

They gave me the option of fried or poached eggs of which I chose the latter. I can’t do with that frazzled egg white, soaked in fat, ugh…

IMG_1216.JPG

After a few minutes, we received a couple of coffees, nothing special, just the regular stuff with a fancy design imprinted in the milk.

IMG_1219.JPG

The order didn’t take long and I was looking at a decent plate of typical English breakfast food.

Ditching the black pudding on to my wife (who likes baked cows blood), I dug into what looked like a sustaining breakfast which would probably shorten my life due to the unfortunate side-effect of narrowing arteries.

@bingbabe ordered an Omelette but what she received looked more like a cheese pizza.

IMG_1220.JPG

…’you have to live a bit right?’…

While I found my food decent, @bingbabe was having issues with her ‘cheese pizza’ and managed around half before giving up.

IMG_1223.JPG

I had a try and found it quite tasty. Some people are so fussy, tut.

IMG_1225.JPG

...'£21 for breakfast? It's a little on the high side, but this is no grease bar'...

I would recommend Maxwell's as a breakfast location despite @bingbabe's reservations.

IMG_1227.JPG

I found the food decent, the location offbeat enough that you don't have to pay to park your vehicle, and the clientele appear to be well-off retirees, who are not going to come up to your table and 'chin you', as they think you look punchable.

Last little comment courtesy of @anomadsoul; it did make me laugh!

Cool review!

"who are not going to come up to your table and 'chin you', as they think you look punchable."

As an uncultured Canadian am not familiar with this. Does it mean that no one will try and pick a fight with you?

It is just that!, a 'chinning' means your chin flies back at high speed due to pressure from a fist exerted to that area.

yeah, that omelette looks more like a quiche or a fritata than an actual omelette. Sounds like you should find some developers and start your own Tasteem on Hive. You win pretty much all of the contests anyway :) Great review!

Somethings gonna turn up sooner or later. There appears to be a lack of activity going on in the last couple of weeks. I hope stuff starts to happen soon.

The place looks decent and the food seems a bit pricy for a breakfast when I convert it to CAD.

Great stuff... feel free to add these under Foodie ... we'll even add a tag on the foodiesunite.net site for it. Too bad about @tasteem - their loss.
