Splinterlands Strategies: Conflicts, Join or Veto?

avatar

Conflicts, Mage Wagons.., as though the Splinterlands platform is not complex enough without yet more ‘stuff’ to bewilder unsuspecting new arrivals.

While the likes of us veterans may find this complicated, convoluted weave of an eco-system understandable, what of the ‘outsiders’, the very people we need to draw in and bring in new money?

I told myself I need to show @dismayedworld, the HIVE platform, as well as the Splinterlands one, and I am not looking forward to either task. There’s too much and the average person can’t take it all in, lest they blow their brains out.

OldAirdropSystem.png
...'the old airdrop system..., it's now history, replaced by a worse system'...

With Rebellion I would have preferred the old method of 'Buy 2400 packs' and gain 12 reward cards plus some extras if you are lucky. It's worked so far from day one, so why change it? Don't break it, if it works.

The reasoning behind this change I understand. To force players to retain ownership, and not dump the cards (or unopened packs), to gain future airdrops. I have never engaged in this ropey practice, nor as far as I know, have any of the people I liaise with.

The VOUCHER token is somewhat underused, and could I say, redundant until occasions or events such as this occur. I for one, sell all these tokens as they don’t work for me.

Anything that sits there doing fuck all is not useful and needs to be converted into something that does.

vouchers.PNG
...'VOUCHER, an underused token. More of the old style Airdrops requiring these such as 'Vruz' would be welcome'...

While I earn many VOUCHER per day, the requirement of 50 per Mage Wagon is going to deter most Splinterland players except for the Whales and large SPS holders.

Likewise, if you didn't buy in heavy with Rebellion, you might think you have little chance of getting even ONE of those 'Rage' cards. Why bother wasting your hard-earned currency on 40 of those Wagons when you could end up with bugger all?

This is the very situation I find myself in, on the very edge and with an expectation of possibly ONE Rage NFT. I bought 185 packs of Rebellion, that's enough for a Bronze-level deck at best with some extras.

At $5 a pack, this equates to around $925 for a Bronze deck? Nobody ever said the game was cheap, but we already know this.

Riftwatchers.PNG
...'Riftwatchers, a mostly decent set besides the mostly crap summoners, Ilthain exempted'...

Having been burnt with Chaos Legion and its massive overprinting, I was not prepared to compromise my HIVE stash to splash out on 2400 packs or so. The cold light of day reveals this to be $12,000. That fact woke me up at launch time. I had bought that many RiftWatchers packs and a repeat order was not on the cards.

RiftWatchers was a decent set and for the most part, has retained its value. No regrets, but enough is enough.

image.png
...'everyone wants Rage, but could it be worth simply buying him instead of gambling?'...

When Conflicts was announced it would be going live, I had to decide. Go with it or Veto?

Having combined ALL my Rebellion cards, I figured around 26 of those Mage Wagons needed to be purchased with a minimum CP of 100 per slot. Figuring VOUCHER to be around 4c per token, that would be around $2 per Wagon.

So, $52 just so I can stake my best cards and have a chance of a single ‘Rage’ NFT? If I do this, then for the entirety of the campaign, I would not be able to rent ANY of my Rebellion cards, and due to their scarcity, they rent reasonably well, even at low levels.

image.png
Source

The one chance I have is factored in from this YouTube video where someone has calculated how many CP's needed throughout the 30-day campaign. I would need to calculate my CP, and maybe I can get at least one guaranteed drop.

Vetoing Conflicts is the other option, and to be honest a lot less farting about. I can sell VOUCHER into the hype (what hype?) and rent my entire Rebellion collection out over the next year or so.

This post gives me a reason to calculate the figures and make that decision.

While it's more exciting to become a lottery winner, pragmatism tells me to not bother. If you have bought LESS packs than me, then you will likely be wasting your money getting these Wagons.

image.png
...'having done a calculation of my Rebellion CP, I come up just short of 27,000 which is the minimum needed to get a single Rage card. Looks like I won't be taking part'...

This is not one of Splinterlands better ideas, and generally I am in favour of their decisions. It's back to renting my Rebellion cards and selling my vouchers.

That doesn't seem so appealing for just 1 NFT, although I dont know what the Rage card does. Is it possible to just buy a rage card? I prefer simple things and have enough spreadsheets and calculations to do at work, to do them with a card game! lol

Rage is pictured above in the post, it's a kick arse monster..., then there are all the other airdrops but as we know for each subsequent one you have less chance of getting anything. I might be wrong about all this and want to join Conflicts but the $52 is putting me off.

We didn't need to shell out before for airdrops, and this seems a crap deal compared to what we have seen before.

Those are some nice abilities and perhaps it will have a limited supply, but yeah, that seems quite an expensive ticket. It is hard to say no to my wife buying some new shoes if I splash out on an expensive NFT.

I am guessing these airdrops will be more valuable than usual and perhaps more top heavy to the large pack buyers. There will be summoners too, card that I will be wanting. I would rather have my HIVE stack, I am already in too deep with Splinterlands to dive down more.

It is easily done tbh! Sometimes I forget how much you are spending buying this and that in Splinterlands!

Yeah, because it's magic money, earned from other means it's more easily spent. I have to rail it in a little. I do like the Rebellion set and will buy from the used market.

You could sell your voucher and the DEC and just buy the cards you want when people start dumping them on the market. Especially if the airdrop cards will start showing up in packs once they are revealed like in the past.

It's release day tomorrow @bozz. That's the time to sell VOUCHER and I intend to. With all these cards being removed from the rental market, you can guess what will happen there?

They already rent very well due to their scarcity. Will also wait until Conflicts is released before adding all mine to the market.

Is it only rebellion cards you can stake to the wagons or all cards? I have a mess of vouchers I have been sitting on. Better get them moved over to HE now.

It's just Rebellion, I didn't go overboard this time. Some of the cards are decent, I have been buying odds here and there.

Oh crap, so I can't even stake other cards to my wagon? That's lame.

It remains to be seen on what happens. The die-hard fans will keep lapping it up but I am getting a little jaded. It's not the fault of Spinterlands, but of the bear.., for the moment I have more faith in that old turkey called HIVE, it's treated me well.

It's good to see how others are viewing this new style of drop!

The reasoning behind this change I understand. To force players to retain ownership, and not dump the cards (or unopened packs), to gain future airdrops. I have never engaged in this ropey practice, nor as far as I know, have any of the people I liaise with.

You liaise with reasonable sorts then :) I haven't taken part in any flipping of packs, but this new drop does also encourage me not to rent any useful (not max for my deck and more than 5/25/75 CP for the drop) Rebellion cards out, which I assume will mean more packs being bought?

While I earn many VOUCHER per day, the requirement of 50 per Mage Wagon is going to deter most Splinterland players except for the Whales and large SPS holders.

I don't count myself as either, and bought over 1500 vouchers with cash this last week. Vouchers do frustrate me though as I get 4 a day, rarely sell, and never seem to have enough when they are required.

Quick one on Wagons - it sounds like they will be required going forward (and are reusable).

I had bought that many RiftWatchers packs and a repeat order was not on the cards.
RiftWatchers was a decent set and for the most part, has retained its value. No regrets, but enough is enough.

I'm not sure of the logic here. The last set have held up in value and earned crypto daily since purchase, and you don't want more of that?

185 packs isn't cheap, but this wouldn't have qualified for many (any?) drops previously. This time around though there is a small chance at least?

So I reckon the new drop stylee:

  • Discourages flipping packs
  • Discourages rentals (which encourages pack buyers)
  • Offers at least some chance of a drop to smaller pack purchasers

As an aside and most likely unrelated, the % chance of getting a totem (as shown on baronstoolbox.com) when harvesting land has shown no better than 0.003% for me, and I have 3 totems. Either I'm a lucky bastard or the %'s are showing a little tighter than what they are.

Cheers!

4 vouchers a day? Did you not get any nodes when they were cheap! Hang on, they are cheap now, in the used market. You should have a look at getting at least one, over the long term my 3 have done me well.

Discourages rentals (which encourages pack buyers)

This sucks! I rent quite a lot of cards but if the rent gets to such a stage that its peanuts, the cards will be added to the bot accounts. Quite sad really, as I used to play a lot more.

You liaise with reasonable sorts then :)

Oh yes, the best!

I just stuck all my Rebellion cards up for rent but had to adjust some as you always get the dickheads listing L3 commons at 180 DEC a day. I'm doing these manually as SplinterRents, I am sure can't handle 'dickhead tactics'. Vouchers listed too, I am quite sad not to be taking part.

I can feel the sadness, emanating as grumpiness perhaps!

Hopefully Rebellion will hold value and give value, then those still buying to max a set (out of love, addiction, stupidity?) Will probably do the same next time.

I thought "vruz" types of things were going to be a quarterly event. Seems not.

They used to be, and then were forgotten about. I was more excited about these than airdrops. They tend to hold their value well and it yielded some great cards, even commons.

  1. Vouchers are not mandatory. One can use credits or DEC. If you are talking new folks.

  2. The reason this system is introduced is to make just buying packs and recycling without holding (while exploiting airdrop) is a thing of the past. That is a good thing. Agree on the added complication for the new players. Maybe we can help them, as there are not many of them.

0

If nobody did this exploit (like us), then this would not have happened. There's always some arse trying to game the system, it's irritating.

No vouchers and all my cards up for rent. I'll be watching you guys in the future with jealous eyes as you tell me how many dual summoners you got, the one that give +2 Magic or Shield to all your monsters (a guess and probably OP!).

I say you have time. This will continue for next 9 months. It is upto the team to give you incentives. If there is not enough incentives for you why would you do it?

You're right, and I am not discounting opting into the next Conflict. It's not the same as the old airdrop system and I can take the rewards in the form of VOUCHER and Rentals for this drop. I am buying single Rebellions to play in RB Brawls, so let's see.

0

avatar

I had also thought of selling the VOUCHERS and getting into airdrop later but then I changed my mind because my current strategy is to buy the packs and sell the cards which are not among my short term buying goals and I keep in my collection only the Rebellion cards that I want to upgrade and use in battle and so putting them in the wagons doesn't take anything away from me but on the contrary it adds a possibility.
I think your strategy is logical but I will try airdrop but only with 15 wagons and 41K CP, my focus is more on Rebellion cards that I can use in battle than airdrop :)

I agree with a lot of what you said. This conflicts even does feel like it is mostly for the whales. I will miss the excitement I had when I got a Carnage Titan from just 10 packs, and that is now impossible with this new system. I do think it is the right move, since it is good for the overall value of the cards, as well as rewards the holding of cards.

Your strategy of renting your cards seems good. I am waiting for the Conflicts to start so I can finally buy cards. Once people have opened their packs, there should be a surplus of common and rare cards.

Yes, this is what I mean. There was a chance before (and still might be if anyone is dumb enough to buy these Wagons with few cards). A friend of mine bought barely any packs yet got some drops. He's jaded now, like many others.

I have disliked the direction Splinterlands has taken for a while and these mage wagons just is another step creating yet another asset making everything more costly and complicated. All this while card prices continue to fall off a cliff as most of their use case is stripped away from them over time.

They have at least managed to get DEC to peg but mostly by milking older existing players and not so much because new money came in. It's quite sad though as the core card game really has the potential to be really fun and accessible.

0

It's not like it used to be for sure. Too many cards to choose when you play is one factor. It's overwhelming and better left for computers to play (bots). Some more filtering would help but was never implemented.

CL fell off a cliff as it was overprinted. RW has done OK, as few were printed. I am keeping my sealed packs, over 400. Nobody could have predicted what would happen, and I am sure you remember all the CL hype in December 2021?

I agree with you about the new airdrop system!
I myself who have been playing splinterlands since 2021 find it difficult to understand how it works and I believe that this system does not help beginners and will not help others to get in, because it is not only an investment it is also a game, and as such it should be accessible but maybe they are losing the spirit, they are only helping the wealthy, I give up I continue to play with my meager cards

Eventually, the whales who earn Rage after first Conflict ends, there will be plenty of Rage to grab around $20+, so I think buying wagons and cards most likely do nothing for me, well surely btw.
