Tales of the Urban Explorer: Fole Creamery

It had been a mixed start. After the successes of 'The New Inn' and 'Froghall Farm', both of which had been far from spectacular, our next target was a pub which by the time we arrived was a large pile of bricks.

Failure's I can stomach, you can always try again, but when the place no longer exists, it's downright fucking annoying. I spent all this time looking you up and you have gone forever…, bastard!

25_IMG_6161_25.jpg

That day's agenda was quite spread out and our next one, some abandoned barracks was not tasting good in my mouth.

I always find ex-military sites very samey, large, unwieldy, and at best filled with some decent graffiti.

@anidiotexplores woke me from semi-conscious driving stupor with a yell of…, 'what's that over there…'

I woke up startled and pulled over quickly screeching the types and sending us both into a forward lurch.

It looked large, abandoned, and was on a side road with a house at the entrance. We would need to do a U-turn and drive down this lane a little to check it out.

23_IMG_6157_23.jpg

Fole Mill was built in 1771. This is very early Industrial Revolution productivity and almost at the time when the Land Owners forced the Serfs to do all the work while they put their feet up and got pissed on the finest whiskey and fat on endless joints of unhealthy meat.

After several changes of owners, including the Co-operative Wholesale Society, Fole Creamery closed in 2009 making 246 people redundant.

It is fitting that a factory that produces cream should exist in the middle of the wilderness. There are plenty of cows around to supply it, and the business rates are likely very low, and yet it had gone bust for one reason or another.

2009 was the start of the Great Recession. I have no doubts it was a contributing factor.

Parking was never going to be an issue. This was a large building on a road that few cars ventured down, it was a dump, lockup, and explore job.

22_IMG_6155_22.jpg

Which entrance; the large left one, or the partially closed right?

1_IMG_6134_1.jpg

We chose the left first and were rewarded with a large room full of crap!

If this was as good as it was going to get, I was going to check out some of the filthy paperwork and possibly get a handle on what it was like working at 'Fole Creamery'.

2_IMG_6135_2.jpg

Well Ron..., I bet you are very proud of your achievement. My daughter used to get similar useless certificates at primary school for passing 'Recorder Stage 5' and the like.

3_IMG_6136_3.jpg

This wasn't any better and was sending me to sleep. It was old and created during the last century, but could have been about suppressing excessive flatulence in the office space while important people are walking around.

6_IMG_6139_6.jpg

We exited and entered the 'other' door which looked like this from the inside. No need to use the handle, just duck and shuffle through. I had to chuckle even though its deliberate vandalism.

4_IMG_6137_4.jpg

The evidence was overwhelming and bang up to date with 2009, the year this place went belly-up.

5_IMG_6138_5.jpg

It had been a bad year and mass redundancies were about to take place, and USDAW, the most incompetent fucking Union in the county was letting everyone know.

Yeah, I have had dealing with these twats who like to take your employee money and in return are toothless wankers.

7_IMG_6140_7.jpg

If this was a method of deterring me from climbing up those metal stairs, it was always going to end in tears. We quickly found another route in the form of some very clear wooden stairs.

8_IMG_6141_8.jpg

This was more like it, there's nothing better than a nice, large airy office complete with nature coming through the windows and interfering with your duties.

9_IMG_6142_9.jpg

Lovely in the summer, a little cold in the deep mid-winter when you are typing away and the snow is settling between your finger joints creating additional arthritis.

10_IMG_6143_10.jpg

There were even spare ink cartridges just in case the inserted ones happen to run dry.

11_IMG_6144_11.jpg

…and a user manual; they were prepared... these office workers.

13_IMG_6146_13.jpg

Those paranormal weird people have been here. They tend to stay overnight and pretend they have seen ghosts. Attention seekers I say, and having seen no ghosts ever in any of these places I can justify my stance.

14_IMG_6147_14.jpg

The large design schematics looked complicated. Valves here, there, and everywhere. I didn't take a lot of notice.

15_IMG_6148_15.jpg-censored.jpg

16_IMG_6149_16.jpg

People should not leave their attendance slips for everyone to see. The grunts at least were paid by the hour and I'm still trying to figure out what the rate of pay was?

17_IMG_6150_17.jpg

18_IMG_6151_18.jpg

'Fole Creamery' was relatively bare besides the offices which looked to have been left in the same state as when everyone bailed. If you wanted to have a good look, there was plenty to go at.

20_IMG_6153_20-censored.jpg

None of the correspondence was even remotely recent, telling me the shutters were pulled well over a decade past and it's been like this since the documented closure date.

21_IMG_6154_21.jpg

If it was secure, the apes had been and made plenty of holes ensuring this was no longer the case.

On leaving we encountered a single vehicle driving down this lonely road.

24_IMG_6158_24.jpg

Maybe 'Fole Creamery' was a victim of its isolation, and they could not recruit anyone with any skills to work there, or was it simply the banking collapse which now seems long ago?

An interesting diversion and better that it was an impromptu discovery made while travelling which albeit are mostly shit, can reveal the odd gem.

So you mean that this building was built in 1771?
Oh my God!
It looks old truly but still looking strong
That's amazing!

Another fine mess. It continually amazes me how quickly these places go to ruin. 2009 isn't that long ago. Just add a few vandals, and hey presto, the elements and nature do the rest.

Within 3 years then can become like this from respectable levels. I have seen it several times. Must be devastating for the owners.

Wow. This was obviously an MI6 lair, and they left in a hurry when their cover was blown

LOL, I loved that scene. Not a pane on glass in sight.., it's like they were blown out.

Do you find the surprise ones like this that you haven't been able to research ahead of time are more fun? I'd think there is a certain bit of mystery behind the places you just happen upon.

Well TBH.., I don't do any research until it's time to write up the articles, so many provide me with a degree of mystery. I had no idea this one closed shop in 2009, and the board with the staff letters shows just that.

Right, but you scout them ahead of time on your FB groups right? Like for points of entry and stuff like that?

Getting in is a different game. Most people won't tell you how to access a place. The reason I document it sometimes is that the intel I show is almost a year out of date and very probably no longer relevant.

It's also a challenge finding out how to it. You can miss access points very easily, only to be told be some smart arse how to get in on claiming your failure.

I go for the photography. As these supposed ghost tend to flirt around in the night I wouldn't be able to take my snaps. Bad for me.

This one is very old, more so that usual. They are generally 19th century buildings. There was no creepiness inside.

It's been a while since I have seen any of your Urban Explorer posts. Sorry for dropping off the grid so to speak. These are amazing photos dude. It's funny to me some of the stuff that was left behind because a few of those office chairs actually look a lot better than the one I am sitting on right now.

I haven't owned a printer in years so I can relate to why they would leave that behind. Seeing those ink cartridges just reminded me of how much those companies would completely bend us over on the cost of them!

LOL, I don't know about that. They might collapse if sat upon, but I did enjoy the scene. Printers and especially huge photocopiers tend to get ditched when they leave. I guess they don't want to carry them.

In the case of printers, it's better to buy a new one (with carts included) than buy replacement carts. It can be cheaper give the cost of new printers.

I really love going through your content. So interesting. I get curious more and more. As if I am taking those walk of adventure with you inside those places. Not that I would really go. Hahhahaha! I'm a very scared cat! Plus if I saw that sticker of attention seekers, I would literally go out stop whatever I was doing and spoil the fun.
I truly enjoyed being back here. More of your posts like this please and do take care while you are spending time for great contents.
Cheers!

There has been some talk of unionizing the library. I have reservations. Why would I want yet another bureaucrat demanding a cut of my pay? How will union elections be less of a clusterfuck shitshow where pompous asshats who can't do anything useful demand power?

Depends if it's mandatory or not. Here.. even the supermarket workers are now given the option and most veto it. When I was working in those types of jobs long ago, it was mandatory and I felt just like you.

My dad was in the trades, and worked for a unionized company. Lots of political crap every election cycle. Lots of Union fat cats who resembled the corporate fat cats to a disconcerting degree. But then again, they did have his back when he got hurt on the job on one occasion.

Well Ron..., I bet you are very proud of your achievement

Ah you see, you missed the point entirely. By issuing a certificate of awareness like this the employer has a come back, a defence of sorts in mitigation if and when dear old Ron submits a claim for noise induced hearing loss. I shall now remove my elf and safety hard hat and ask

where are the purple dildos?

Amazing Taxman so pedantic about record keeping, privacy, keeping records for x number of years. Company closes down leaving information strewn everywhere, privacy out the door!

Ornate brickwork to entrance, impressive.

Milk would have been fresh back then, not the long-life watered down shit they currently sell, unless you find a cow in pasture to milk directly, who knows what in there?

The amount of accounts I have seen, boxes of the things labelled per year. It's quite normal!

I'm surprised they stayed open for centuries! The place could almost have run as a tourist trap if they'd wanted to...
