Tales of the Urban Explorer: Ploughman’s Table, Red Squirrel

'Ploughman’s Table, Red Squirrel'. It’s a mouthful for a pub, and despite some googling, I still can’t decide whether the prefix denotes a ‘chain’ or not. In the UK, we have plenty of those with Toby, Weatherspoon’s, and Harvester being three that immediately spring to mind.

36_IMG_7297_36.jpg

For now, I will give it the full title regardless of whether it is deserving or otherwise. Grabbing a decent external shot of this pub was not easy. They all looked completely shit and gave the impression it was some trendy one-room barn.

Being situated next to a very busy, ‘no stopping’ road was an issue and left us little choice other than the supermarket parking on the wrong side.

34_IMG_7293_34.jpg

Crossing over this fast moving double-lined dual carriageway was reminiscent of ‘Frogger’, we being the frogs.

Red_Squirrel_pub.jpg

…’Harvester pubs were not so bad, though still a chain. This image is from 2014 when times were better and before it changed chains. From what I read, the pub was sealed up around 4 years later’…

Source

The grounds of the ’Ploughman’s Table, Red Squirrel’ were not boarded or sealed, and we hopped over a low fence that took us partially out of sight from the passing motorists for once.

33_IMG_7292_33.jpg

What was better was the front door was open. We wasted no time and got inside, gently closing the door behind us.

1_IMG_7260_1.jpg

Did we manage to get here early for once, before the wankers arrived? It almost looked like a serene, if slightly dusty pub with just a tad of broken glass littering the floor. That could have been the remains of yesterdays drunken brawl.

2_IMG_7261_2.jpg

The fact the back door was also wide-open was even more bewildering. I would not like to see what ’Ploughman’s Table, Red Squirrel’ is like now.

3_IMG_7262_3.jpg

I know full well that those flower portraits, are removed, thrown on the floor, stood on and the cream wall behind is now full of messy, talentless graffiti. It is inevitable, and the facts were that few knew about this one.

4_IMG_7263_4.jpg

5_IMG_7264_5.jpg

There is a little damage to this secluded leather bound booth, and you are almost certain to gain a little mould clinging to your trousers but otherwise could enjoy a nice sticky toffee pudding while sat with your beloved.

6_IMG_7265_6.jpg

Many staff worked here, as well as several insects that appear attached to the once staff role. Are those real bugs, or fake? It doesn’t look quite right.

7_IMG_7266_7.jpg

A wash is all that's needed, and then Pepsi could once again be drunk from this vessel.

8_IMG_7267_8.jpg

9_IMG_7268_9.jpg

Next time I see one of these, I will squeeze the ‘Pepsi’ button and see what happens.

10_IMG_7269_10.jpg

Cheap kids food, I looked around for a ‘proper’ menu.

11_IMG_7270_11.jpg

I have always wanted an authentic ‘Pepsi’ glass and this would be the place to pilfer one, but as always I don’t think about such terrible immoral acts when within any abandoned place.

12_IMG_7271_12.jpg

13_IMG_7272_13.jpg

I headed up the stairs, after searching hard to find them. There was a couple of offices and as usual, they had been ransacked.

14_IMG_7273_14.jpg

A comfortable cream leather couch, fit for a homeless person until the sealers arrived and entombed them forever.

15_IMG_7274_15.jpg

The carrier bag looked suspect. There are much better places to dump your excrement.. surely?

16_IMG_7275_16.jpg

This one looked suspiciously like the bosses office. If there’s a leather chair, or even imitation leather then you know that you have found it.

17_IMG_7276_17_censored.jpg

An inventory of cash takings? Things were hardly looking good for the ’Ploughman’s Table, Red Squirrel’.

18_IMG_7277_18.jpg

19_IMG_7278_19.jpg

Nothing unusual here besides the pitiful income. Did anyone ever eat or drink at this place?

20_IMG_7279_20.jpg

They are not cheque books, but paying in books and shitloads of them. If only they were paying in something other than peanuts, the pub may still be open.

21_IMG_7280_21_censored.jpg

Minimum wage of £5.72, but that was 2014. How can one live off such shitty hourly wages? I removed some of Leanne’s bank details, they may well still be current.

22_IMG_7281_22.jpg

The email told me quite a lot, one thing that ‘Ploughman’s Table’ was a chain, another email recipient namely, ‘Bentley Wood Farm’ is quite close to where I live. That has also closed down and is being renovated.

23_IMG_7282_23.jpg

24_IMG_7283_24.jpg

’Ploughman’s Table, Red Squirrel’ appears to be a cash-centric pub. I haven’t seen this many of those coin bags in years. Thinking 1p, 2p is a recipe for disaster. That’s not going to pay for your hookers.

25_IMG_7284_25.jpg

@anidiotexplores came out of the ‘football room’ gagging, he’s quite sensitive to pungency and I think someone had pulled out the lizard and had an extended piss. This could well have been the best sleep, but only if you could endure the fumes.

26_IMG_7285_26.jpg

Keys are great, but only if the doors are locked. They were anything but that here.

27_IMG_7286_27.jpg

Descending, I noticed the odd up-turned chair. One or two idiots had already been, but not the A+ grade lot.

28_IMG_7287_28.jpg

Those poor tea and milk jugs will never serve the punters again. It’s the end of life for you lads.

29_IMG_7288_29.jpg

I initially assumed these were the ‘sacking letters’ being neatly prepared just before ’Ploughman’s Table, Red Squirrel’ was sealed up. Pension scheme? I wasn’t aware barmaids were offered such things!

30_IMG_7289_30.jpg

I grimaced at the fact that many more things would soon be out of place besides the chair and a section of the settee that someone had pulled out.

31_IMG_7290_31.jpg

If only it could be sealed up quickly then these ‘works of art’ would be saved from the masses of monsters about to descend here.

32_IMG_7291_32.jpg

We left noticing the security cameras that were utterly unconvincing.

35_IMG_7295_35.jpg

Some other explorers we met later in the day would be also visiting. The tour bus had started.

Seeing the first portion of the building seemed it was still okay.
That made me wonder was this put on sale? Or just left and abandoned?

I don't recall seeing a 'for sale' sign but there probably is one. Who would want to buy a vandalised wreck? That's what it will be now.

Now I am thinking, was all abandoned building you visited was just left there? Literally abandoned?

After the operation ceased , that's it? What about the land like that?

That's a lot of wasted artworks.. They should be placed somewhere else where they can be valued..

I would guess they are broken and thrown around the pub by now. I hardly ever re-visit, as seeing them after the mob have arrived it upsetting and annoying.

That one didn't look too bad, but I'm sure in a few years it will get trashed more and more. Probably the only thing saving it so far is the busy road, glad you didn't get squished like Frogger!

but I'm sure in a few years it will get trashed more and more.

I haven't seen any recent reports, meaning it's off-limits now. Who knows what state it's in.

Always upsetting to see the old community meetup places falling into disarray.

It's more upsetting when they are sealed and we can't get in! 😀

Agree exploration when sealed off it's a problem.
Better memories in places to congregate, enjoy the locals over an ale.
Too many places closing/falling down!

Wow, that place looks like you could almost get it back up and running again without too much work. One of the better locations that you have found for sure! I'm a little surprised that it hasn't been fire-bombed yet!

Yes, very unusual considering the door was open both sides. Good timing is what I put that down to, and good luck. It's always the case.

Yeah, I guess so. It's doubtful that it is still in such good condition now.

That building is wonderful
It has almost everything I like
Guess what I love most?
I love the cup that has the Pepsi logo

Nice to see a place not wrecked yet, but sounds like it will be completely trashed by now. Sad to see another place that once held promise and employed people, now out of business - what a shame.

This was such an interesting read and looking at those pictures takes me back to working at my first restaurant. It is so shocking that everything was just left there and the doors aren't even closed. So much useful stuff. Great post 👏🏻

All that art! This is why I couldn't be an urban explorer or an archeologist, I'd just loot everything. Heh. I'm more of the grave robber type, I guess.

Maybe with a good cleaning, looking for clients who like the mysterious could be a good business, many things are in good condition and the works of art are interesting, let's see how long this time capsule lasts.
