Tales of the Urban Explorer: Return to Jubilee Mill

It had been a year since I had last tried to get inside Jubilee Mill (and failed).

After a tip-off by @dizzydiscovery who lives almost next door to this 19th-century building that there was now an access point, we made it our first visit during one nice sunny day last July.

A little digging tells me the mill was a relative late-comer to Britain’s industrial revolution, being built in 1891.

Plans have been made to demolish this sprawling wreck to make for new housing. As usual, nothing has happened.

The owner has sprayed the surrounding trees with black grease-paint as we found out last year while failing to gain access.

Now the paint is futile as you can simply walk through the walls and get inside. That's all I will say about 'access'.

A casual glance would make you think Jubilee Mill is somewhere lost in time. It's not exactly in an urban location but is just a short walk from a major road.

I was not expecting much to be inside, perhaps excepting death by falling through the floors, but this an occupational hazard that comes with this hobby.

Locks are all good and well, but if the fence next to it is destroyed then it’s not too effective.

Every room appeared to have a mandatory hole for one to fall through. I wouldn't want it any other way.

After doing more than one hundred explores, you get a feel about where to stand and where to avoid.

It was at this point in my Urban Explorer career I started looking more at details. Focus on what is there, even if it is not too exciting.

Some rooms are dodgier than others; I entered this room at the far left corner and made it to here without being killed. You can do it if you’re careful.

This was about the only piece of genuine machinery left, complete with some green fabric and lots of spider webs.

You have to make your choices of which direction you want to go next with some thought. Which way can I go and remain alive?

Keeping close to those large mill posts works well, at least it has for me… so far.

The ground floor was much more stable. These old mills are very well made and required a lot of effort to build them.

I found Jubilee Mill quite atmospheric, the colours blended well with the gloom to give me some nice shots.

Left or right? I hugged the wall and then went left between the holes to the central pillar. @dizzydiscovery (who has a fear of weak floors) reluctantly followed.

One can always face your fears and overcome them.

The staircase was very sturdy and made of metal, though you can’t tell.

This room had a stream running through it. No shortage of water I suppose, but it's going to have to be plugged if it ever does get demolished. Having a large pond next to the mill does not help.

If we get heavy rain I can see the pond is going to cause floods within Jubilee Mill. Why did they build it next to static water?

Despite little being left inside, Jubilee Mill was a good start to our adventures that day. It is worth a visit, but not all areas are open to the 'general public' unless you risk your life.
